Newsday: Best: Yanks pull plug on Joba’s radio gig

Joba Chamberlain found that out when he came within a midge’s whisker of signing up for a weekly spot on Michael Kay’s ESPN 1050 show, which recently added controversy-in-waiting Billy Wagner.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman nixed the idea. Turns out such gigs are a Yankees no-no. “It’s a policy I’ve had in place for a long time now,” he said before yesterday’s mist-out. “We should speak with one voice, whether it is the manager or general manager. They can speak postgame or pregame or in their normal interview process but not have a regular schedule.”

(Asked about being denied a place on Kay’s show, Chamberlain said he was not aware of any such deal. Strange. Maybe his agent worked on it without telling him.)

Cashman said the Yankees also prohibit players from writing diaries or columns for newspapers come playoff time. “We’ve had that shut down for years now,” he said. “These guys are paid to play baseball; they’re not paid to be columnists or talk show hosts. They can do that when their playing careers are over.”

Hank is one rich man who is no modern lover of today's athlete.

As a PR policy for an extremely media-intensive multibillion dollar business, forbidding players from expressing opinions to anybody besides sportswriters, meaning forbidding players from expressing opinions directly to the public -- which is basically what this policy amounts to -- makes sense, however Draconian it might seem. And no, the first amendment doesn't prevent one's employer from making a gag order part of the conditions of employment.

I don't necessarily agree with it as a business model, but the Yankees are heavily invested in presenting to the public a hyper-professional image. To their fans they're No Nonsense Hard Workers That Play The Game The Right Way; to their unfans they're horrendously boring preprogrammed robots. Anyway, obviously the Yankees are going to protect that image, and their players interacting directly with the public has the potential to be disastrous to that.

What is it Tommy Lasorda said after David Cone left the mound early in game 2 of the 1988 NLCS after "writing" a column criticizing Orel Hershiser for not challenging hitters in game 1 "Freedom of the press is great. That's why you don't see any Dodgers writing columns".
One guy who should cut back is Girardi. Weekly Q & A with Fatso and Fruitloops, his own YES show and I think he does something weekly with Danny Aiello's nephew.

So should we expect Phil Hughes' blog to go bye-bye too? If so, how will we ever know what his favorite Easter treat is?

Yes; we'll not hear a peep out of him.

Dammit. I wish I would have thought of that one.

Another assinine Yankee policy. The Patriots which are the american sports standard for speaking with one voice (and second only to the Yankees in chokes) even allow the players to do weekly radio spots.

The Yankees are idiots. They clearly don't know what they are doing despite being the biggest revenue team in baseball.

If so, and I think the facts are contra, this meaningless prohibition hardly demonstrates that.

Agree and disagree. Agree this prohibition doesn't demonstrate this. I disagree that this prohibition is meaningless. I would say robbing your fan base of unfiltered comments from your players is a large prohibition.

They did trade away Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps.
