Newsday: Davidoff - Mets need to keep winning for us to start believing

The more the Mets win, the more they move away from the cloud of crisis that hovers over them. Because right now, even after these past five games, the Mets must feel as if they’re in the midst of 162 one-game schedules. As if any loss can punch their collective guts and imperil this whole thing.

It’s a sensation that Saturday’s losing manager knows well.

“That only used to be like that with the Red Sox,” Joe Torre said before the game, recalling his Yankees days. “Then, all of a sudden, when your record’s not what it is (supposed to be), there’s a story about each game that takes on a life of its own. It’s very difficult. It was difficult for me.”
...
“We look more relaxed,” said Carlos Beltran, who crushed the game-tying homer off Broxton. “The energy is there. There’s no distraction anymore,” now that Randolph is no longer in danger.

I’m not sure about that last part. The Mets have plenty more work to do before Willie can start booking his 2009 condo in Port St. Lucie.

“I think once you start winning on a regular basis, even when you lose here and there, that loss won’t take on as much of a story line,” Torre said. “But that’s going to take time. It still has to be a couple-of-week period.”

If the Mets win the Santana-Kuroda matchup and an go 5-2 against the Padres and Giants in the next week, I think they will be over the hump. That works out to a 10-4 stretch which is pretty good. They are tied in the loss column with the Braves (who seem to play great only against the Mets) and two back of the Phillies. (I still don't believe the Marlins are for real).

I'm sorry, but a fan believes when the team ISN'T winning, Davidoff, you dipshlt.

So who gets sent down for Pedro, Pelfrey or Vargas?

Here are the pertinent numbers:

Pelfrey: 2-6, 56 IP, 4.98 ERA, 29/25 k/bb, 4 hr, 1.70 WHIP, 4.65 FIP, .335 BABIP.

Vargas: 2-2, 24 IP, 4.50 ERA, 12/8 k/bb, 4 hr, 1.04 WHIP, 5.37 FIP, .186 BABIP.

Pelfrey's BABIP isn't just bad luck. He gives up a lot of line drives. He actually has pretty good control and walks more guys than his command suggests he should because he has a hard time putting guys away. Righties don't hit for any power against him while lefties smack him around. He has options.

Vargas: He is mediocre and will give the Mets a 4.75-5.25 ERA while averaging 5.5 IP/s. He has good stuff but gives up too many bombs to be better than that. The Mets could stick him in the bullpen instead of trying to send him through waivers where he'd probably get picked up.

The solution is clear to me. Heilman gets sent down to work out his kinks ( or be converted to starting, less likely, but the smart move). Muniz stays put. Pelfrey stays in the rotation for now on a short leash, and Vargas goes to the pen as long relief.

Pelfrey's future is too tied in with the Mets future to be converted to relief. While I would have sent him down before today's game, today's start was too encouraging to demote without giving him another shot to show that he's taken a step forward.

Also, I like Tatis and Slappy (who should just be exclusively a righty hitter). Weird season.

Castillo has an OBP of .400 as a lefthanded hitter, Rask. Luis Castillo is doing very well just as he is. The Mets just need him to say healthy.

Tatis isn't very good but he is better than Easley. When Valentin's ready, they should cut Easley and use the Stache in his role.

We must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.

Does Heilman still have options? I doubt it.
Vargas to the pen, Muniz to AAA more likely.

I'll believe once I get my miniature American flag.

Actually, I like Tatis because of his animation. This team could use the energy that he and Pedro bring naturally.
Also, I admit - I got sucked in with his cheesy WFAN interview after Thursday game - "All that hard work to get back to the majors, to be the player I once was." I'm a sucker for redemptive narratives.

I doubt Davidoff had anything to do with the headline.

I think they should DL Heilman with some phantom arm tiredness and have him work out in extended Spring Training. Keep Muniz. He's solid.

Move Pelfrey to the bullpen. I think Vargas is doomed to fail -- eventually -- but not yet. But keep Pelfrey close by so he can step right in. Demoting him would kill any kind of confidence, I would assume.

I personally think Pelfry would be almost Papelbonesque as a closer when/if Wagner leaves.

Does Heilman still have options? I doubt it.

Contract purchased in 2003, optioned in 2004 and 2005.

14 - what's the upshot?
   16. Greg Maddux School of Reflexive Profanity Posted: June 01, 2008 at 11:21 AM (#2801979)
He has one option left, plus a hair over four years of service, so he can be sent down without his consent between now and some time in the middle of next May.

I believe the caged bird sings. Wait-that's not right- I know why the caged bird sings.

I believe I can fly.

Howard, are you ok?

Someone check on Howard.

Someone check on Howard.

I'm good- just up against my book deadline. So all my coherence goes there right now.

I believe the children are our future.
