Newsday: Maine injures elbow, Church out but Mets win

The Mets won a game in rousing fashion and lost two players in bizarre fashion Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park.

John Maine walked off the mound in the sixth inning after grabbing his left (non-throwing) elbow three times. The Mets called the odd injury a forearm cramp.

Then there was this ominous announcement in the eighth inning: Ryan Church left the game because of dizziness.
...
The Mets scored three runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to overcome a 4-3 deficit. It could end up being one of their best wins of the season. It also could end up being one of their most costly if they lose their No. 3 starter and rightfielder for any length of time.

Is there ever such a thing as an uneventful time for the Mets?

John Maine is their No. 2 starter.

I don't think it is a big deal. It's his non-throwing elbow and I think it's just a cramp. He looked like he wanted to stay in the game. I am more worried about Church and it's going to be interesting to see if he plays tomorrow.

I think the Met bullpen is going to be really strong in the second half. Heilman looks like he has straightened himself out and Sanchez's velocity has been better recently. Bullpen ERA isn't everything but Wagner/Heilman/Show/Pedro II/Sanchez/Smith have a combined ERA of 3.35 this season. Their bullpen has had too many outings by bad pitchers no longer on the team but hopefully that doesn't happen in the second half.

Nothing too encouraging about Feliciano allowing a hit to the first guy he sees again.

I have a feeling October's going to be pretty dull.

Maine's fine. Church is worrysome.

Ryan Church is critical to this team. To redo that sequence in that Atlanta game all over again...

They need to stop babying Maine.

Church supposedly had a migraine unrelated to the concussions.
   9. Alan S Posted: July 06, 2008 at 02:19 AM (#2845286)
How could they know whether or not it's related to the concussions? Unless Church had a history of migraines prior to the concussions, it would seem that anything abnormal going on in his head could be reasonably connected to the events of the past few months. This seems like something that just might not be going away anytime soon (or ever).

I'm not a neurologist, but it seems to me that this is something that the Mets and Church will just have to deal with, very carefully of course. Test him for whatever can be tested for on a regular basis, make it very clear to him that he is to steer clear of walls/be entirely open about whatever discomfort he might feel/not go head first into people's knees/etc. From the very limited knowledge I have of the subject, this doesn't seem like the kind of thing that a year's rest will help much more than the month he got. Of course, they seemed to have screwed up that initial recovery.

Input from anyone who actually knows what they are talking about with regard to this subject would be welcomed and appreciated, as I will once again state that everything I'm saying is based more on logic than any actual knowledge.

In the post-game interview, Church claimed he had a history of migranes and that this one was no different than the others.

I was referencing a report on WFAN that cited the Mets' doctor as its source. I should have mentioned that.

Looking back at my post, the tone seems to come across as a bit rude. That was certainly not intended. It was just a general question. And I assumed that you indeed were basing your comment on something coming from the team, but I still wonder how they could really know whether or not something like this is related to the concussions. The topic just seems to be one that is so little understood that its unreasonable to come to that kind of conclusion.

Per Rotoworld"

When Church left in the eighth inning, he immediately called his neurologist. Dr. Anita Wu assured Church that the symptoms sounded like they were related to a severe headache. The Mets' outfielder has dealt with migraines since he was a freshman in high school. "I'm relieved that my doctor said that this was probably triggered because of a migraine," Church said. "I'm going to get some medication for it ... the onset of it, it's just like I had migraines in the past."

Over the phone diagnosis suggesting "probably" just a migraine. Yeah, that's ironclad. No way it's related to his concussions. I mean, any doctor will tell you that you won't see an increase of a pre-existing migraine condition after multiple concussions, right? What a joke.

The Mets are simply pioneers in the phone diagnosis field.

"Biopsy? Nah, it doesn't sound like cancer to me."

Just think of the billions it will save!

"Ironclad"? No. But certainly not the preposterous diagnosis the last 2 posts suggest. He has a long history of migraines and described his symptoms to HIS neurologist -- a doctor who has a history with him. Really doesn't seem all that outrageous.

But, having a pre-existing migraine condition is compatible with this instance of a migraine being affected to some degree by his other head trauma.

Lots of us get migraines and yet might get migraines more often right after being knocked in the head.

OK. So now BBTF is better able to diagnose Church than is his treating physician.

Even cheaper than phone diagnoses!

How do we do it?

VOLUME! VOLUME! VOLUME!

By the way ... Congratulations, your girlfriend is pregnant.
