The DBacks gave this one away by starting Owings on a bum ankle. The worst part is that they didn't have to given that there was an extra day off. That's the type of boneheaded move by DBacks management that infuriates me. I don't mind losing, but I hate giving away games when there's no reason to.

I said before the game that I thought it was stupid to keep Owings's balky ankle on four-day rest while pushing Webb and Haren back a day. Nothing in this game convinced me that he wouldn't have been best served by having a couple extra days to rest.

In fact, it was such an obvious thing to do that I can't understand why I never once heard that it was possibility. He had his bullpen session Tuesday and after that they were dead-set on starting him Friday - even when he was limping around the bases on Wednesday.

I agree dahlian. I'm so upset about the decision that I want to know who wasresponsible for it. Of course Owings would say he's ready to go. But isn't it up to Melvin and Byrnes to realize he isn't ready an do what's best for the team?

Even on a night when he didn't have it,and shouldn't have been out there, did you guys see Owings 12 pitch at bat that resulted in a walk? It cost Maine an inning, and added an inning to the bullpen's workload.

A must-win with a record of 20-9? Really? The Diamondbacks will probably win tomorrow but I can understand not wanting to face Johan Santana on Sunday having already lost the first two games of the series, even with Haren going.

D-back fans, are you not concerned about the lack of lefthanded bats in that lineup? Drew and Montero are OK but they don't exactly strike fear in the opposing pitchers.

Hudson, too, is a switch-hitter. It's not ideal, but I don't think there are any reasonable moves they could make to do anything about. The outfield is set - even had they jettisoned Byrnes, Quentin was also a righty. Tracy will add some more options when he comes off the d.l. but it's looking more and more like his future is elsewhere.

I guess as long as guys can hit, I'm not all that concerned about their handedness. If anything, I'd be inclined to think that of two players with opposite handedness that are guaranteed to put up the exact same numbers over an entire season against the same competition, you'd be better off taking the righty since the platoon disadvantage is lesser. Basically, a line-up full of right-handed hitters is less-likely to face a single pitcher that mows down righties than a left-handed line-up would be likely to get terrorized by a good left-hander.

Of course, that's nothing more than a WAG. If anybody knows anything more about which handedness is preferable in the abstract, I'd love to hear about it.
