Newsday: Mets looking closer at ‘pen help through trade

The Rockies’ Brian Fuentes and the Pirates’ Damaso Marte would be good insurance policies, but one name that seems to have dropped off the Mets’ radar is the A’s Huston Street, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The other two, however, will be costly in terms of talent, with other teams asking for their top prospects at Double-A Binghamton: Jonathon Niese, Eddie Kunz and Daniel Murphy.

“I think most managers love to know that when you get a lead it’s not coming back,” Jerry Manuel said. “Anybody that can shorten the game for you is a great advantage.”

If Church gets cleared for more baseball activity Thursday, the Mets will breathe a sigh of relief, even though it could be another week before he is ready to return. That lessens the urgency some, with Fernando Tatis and Endy Chavez capable fill-ins. But the Mets have kept their sights on Raul Ibanez and Casey Blake while dropping back in the pursuit of Xavier Nady.

The Mets top-6 (Wagner/Heilman/Sanchez/Schoeneweis/Smith/Feliciano) have a 3.51 ERA and that's with Heilman underperforming this season. I don't expect them to pick up an impact reliever. They just need Heilman and Sanchez to pitch better.

Ibanez - no
Nady - not at the price
Blake - no!
Fuentes - I'd love it, but how?
Marte - see Nady

If they trade Niese for any of the guys Benji listed, i'll kill Minaya. He and BRAD HOLT! are the only starting pitching prospects I can see who have a shot in hell of making the bigs next year.

Holt's still in Low-A. A lot of bad things have to happen to the Mets if he's starting games for the Mets in 2009.

Well, you come up with a second starting pitching prospect smart guy. This system blows! Bobby Parnell? Bleh.

Ya think?

It blows me away that Damaso Marte commands too high a price. I thought he'd've been toast a couple of years on now after declining with the Sox.

He can't. But neither can you, at least not when you include the "next year" qualifier. Holt IS definitely a prospect, and one to be optimistic about. But his ETA is not 2009, unless the Mets pull a Man U., circa 1958 . . . .

Any changes to the rotation are going to involve Niese, or someone who comes from elsewhere. Not from within.

What happened to the Randy Winn rumors? Are the Giants still in the pennant race? Can they lose 15 games in the next 4 days so they dump Winn's salary on the Mets?

It makes sense that the Mets would "drop back" in the Nady chase. If they aren't trading Niese, then they just flat-out can't afford him.

Also: Kunz? Yuck.

Can't the Mets just try the lightning-in-a-bottle approach with a minor league starter or something? I mean, it's not a great option, but it's better than dealing an actual prospect, right...?
