Newsday: Mets pen falters in 6-4 loss to Astros

Carlos Beltran smacked two home runs for the second time this season, but the bullpen ruined a solid effort by Oliver Perez as the Mets fell to the Astros, 6-4, in 10 innings at Shea.

Aaron Heilman gave up a first-pitch double to pinch hitter Geoff Blum and the tying RBI single to pinch-hitter David Newhan in the seventh inning. In the 10th, Pedro Feliciano served up home runs to pinch hitter Brad Ausmus and Darin Erstad as the Mets suffered their second straight loss.
...
Perez received a standing ovation when he was pulled with one out in the seventh inning… But the crowd, which started to get restless at the sight of Heilman, soon turned angry and rightfully so.
...
That was all for Heilman and the crowd immediately ripped into Scott Schoeneweis as soon as his name was announced.

i was at this game.

i was sitting with my mother, and said "it's Brad Ausmus, i don't think we need to be too worried."

and then he hit a ####### homer.

Brad Ausmus.

he of a 16 year career w/ 77 HR total.

####### a.

(on a side note, can we please just DFA Heilman already?)

Manuel managed an awful game today.

There's nothing the Mets can do but keep running Heilman out there. He was good as recently as last year, his peripherals aren't bad, and his stuff has never been better.

Maine's stuff was pretty good yesterday. He got beat but he was throwing great. If they do shut him down, do they call up Niese or stick with Stokes?

Gee, I wonder if the loss had anything to do with Manuel needing 6 pitchers to get through the final 3.2 innings.

Eventually he found one -- Feliciano -- who didn't have it.

To comment on my own post, I doubt the Mets will call up Niese. He is already at 161.1 IP this season and the Mets seem very hesistant to let their young pitchers increase their workload too much. He has already pitched about 30 more innings than last year.

Thank you for dredging up horrible, horrible memories from 2005.

Heilman ####### blows. i don't give a #### what his peripherals say, he's been sporting a shitty ERA for a reliever for over a year, and he's reaching a David Weathersesque level of letting every damned inherited runner score.

I actually didn't have a huge problem with Manuel's pitching choices, outside of his use of Heilman in the first place.

FWIW--and that may be nothing--the Daily News today called Niese "the likely candidate" to be called up if Maine is shut down.

I understand your feelings on the Mets and their young pitchers, but at some point you have to figure they put winning this year ahead of of what Niese might give them in the futue, espcially as its not like they're going to be flogging him for 220 innings

Only his K-rate is particularly good. His walk rate sucks and his HR rate isn't good either.

That was about the most surprising event I've ever seen in a game like that. It was so surprising that I was too shocked at the time to realize how surprising it was. Absolutely unbelievable, especially since it wasn't some Crawford Box blooper but a 400-foot HR that would have been out easily in just about any other park (instead of barely hitting over the yellow line in left-center).

Yeah, he has upped his Ks, but at the costs of allowing more walks, and more flyballs.

Did they seriously burn through 6 pitchers to get 11 outs?

holy christ, I didn't know Tony La Russa managed the Mets now.

That included Perez, who started the game.

Manuel could have tried to get another inning out of Joe Smith.

is there a more beautiful sight than bradley awes much rising to the occasion, lordly bat in hand???

ahhhhhhhh

sighhhhhhhhhh

the reason grrrls aren't allowed to play mlb is because they know we go to bradley and say - boy if i throw you a high hard one down the middle will you do the same to me?

That's better than 2 balls in the dirt, I would imagine.

Sportscenter referred to him as "future Astros manager Brad Ausmus". I'm just wondering if Drayton will jump him up right to G.M.

That might be the first time in history of the site we've discussed someone other than Lisa jumping Brad Ausmus

I hope the Mets cut bait on Heilman, and I hope someone takes a chance w/ him as a starter (which is something the Mets should've done a loooooong time ago instead of cycling through the has-beens and never-wills they've dealt w/ the past 2-3 years).

If Erstad homers off you - RETIRE. Rob Nenn did.

It's a puzzle to me why the Shea crowd has not definitely turned on Heilman to give him the Benitez/Looper/Julio treatment. He's been booed for stretches but somehow has a longer leash than the others.

Well, he lacks something in common with two of those guys., while Looper was a hired gun, and Heilman came through the system.

What does "acquired from Baltimore" have to do with it?
   24. Crispix Attacks is in the best shape of his life.  Posted: August 25, 2008 at 04:57 PM (#2915773)
Seriously, I think it's because Heilman has no history of being a closer and was never proclaimed as the New Mets Closer, and therefore people didn't expect big things from him and then become upset when he failed to deliver

Even now he's only had 4 save attempts in August. He flies just far enough under the radar that the typical fan has no high expectations for him.

And he was good for 3 straight years before this. Geez, tough crowd. This crowd is so tough that it even criticizes other crowds for not being tough enough.
