Newsday: Revved-up Pedro: ‘We owe something to fans’

Pedro Martinez vocalized Friday afternoon what many Mets fans have felt since September’s historic collapse.

“We’re due to win. We owe something to the fans and to the people of New York,” the 36-year-old righthander said before Friday night’s game against the Dodgers. “We owe it. We built the team that’s supposed to win it. And I think the talent’s here. We’re due to do something great here and I hope we do soon.”

Manager Willie Randolph announced before the game that Martinez, out since hearing his left hamstring “pop” April 1 at Florida, will start Tuesday in San Francisco.

As much as I'd like to think Pedro's mere presence is going to make a difference, the Mets didn't exactly thrive in September last year despite the fact that Petey pitched well down the stretch. The Mets biggest problem has been the starting pitching other than Maine and Santana. Pedro should help there and I think Vargas will do OK as the fifth starter. I hope Perez pitchs better than he has.

Pedro, ol pal, if you want to help us fans it will be easy. Find a way to make Randolph and Heilman disappear.

Better still, stay healthy.

Pedro owes it to his employers and the fans to retire and quit stealing money.

That's a ludicrous comment from any angle. Pedro was good in September last year.

Pedro already gave 'the people of New York' a pennant.

That was Grady.

How does the word "Grady" get by the nanny?
