Then he would have continued playing with a .875 Child-Saving Factor, been well below-average in Ultimate Kid Rescue Zone Rating, and performed significantly below expectation in the brand-new Probablistic Model of Child Retrieval Range.
But he'd still win the Golden Bassinet award.

An interesting twist of fate, given that the truck driver, one Jeff Maier, is already a hero in the Bronx for his interference with a ball in play during the playoffs a number of years ago.

I'd worship THAT guy for sure, somebody who can't even drive a TRUCK properly, yeah.
If Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot or Idi Amin heroically rescued a child from the path of a speeding truck, would we be willing to instantly wipe away all judgement of their past genocidal wrong-doings and instantly re-christen them heroes?
Didn't think so! So why is it that when A-Rod; someone that is arguably more evil and genocidal than Hitler, Pol Pot and Amin COMBINED, supposedly commits this act, we are willing to cut him so much slack and forgive him for all his past sins? WHY!?!?!?!?!
Actually, listening to the frontrunning ######## on NY radio, he'd be more of a hero in NY. Whatever makes you happy though (which is apparently nothing these days).
Good for ARod. It's nice to remember that these players' character cannot be summed up by how they hit in the clutch. Hope the fans remember that.

I'm kidding but you guys have to admit this sounds a little fairy-taled up. No matter what it was a nice gesture by A-Rod and he even called over a few other players to talk to the family which is cool.
But when I heard Michael Kay speak about the incident during the broadcast of the game, my first thought was "gimme a break."
So did I, sort of. I was worried that he was the one who brought it up before the game or something, so I searched for the story.

Why? A-Rod doesn't hit against us. Plus his fielding is a bit shoddy.

If you don't like reading about celebrities rescuing children, cancel your newspaper subscription, throw away your TV, cancel your internet service, and subscribe to The Economist. They only mention ARod in relation to his contract, and even that's only once every few years.

I wouldn't knock Jeter, it was clearly the third basemen's play. If the boy'd been in the lane to Jeter's right, then he'd have been your guy.

You missed my point. I like hearing the story. I just don't want to hear it from A-Rod. As a Yankees fan, I hate to see Schilling go into Red Light mode. To be fair, I have to ding A-Rod for doing the same thing.

At first I thought, okay, this must be an attempt at humor in the non-funny, ironic way (you know, the kind that never works on message boards), but no. Sorry to pick on you, James, but you're not even trying.
Players are all victims of the media. Stop blaming them. Was he supposed to say "no comment"? He got asked, he answered.
No, it's not fair, because it's not the same thing. A-Rod didn't walk into the clubhouse and say to a couple of reporters, "Hey, I saved a kids life today." If he had done that, sure he's open to criticism, but if the media already knew about it and asks him what happened, why shouldn't he comment?

I don't mean to sound too cynical, and it probably happened just this way, but...if this were April 1...
I like the Yankees, can't stand the Red Sox, but I'm still real skeptical about this story. Sounds just too much like a Hollywood scene.
I'm waiting for the anti-Yankee blogs to find the holes in this story, but if its legit, great job A-Rod!
Because every thing else to do with A-Rod is too damned expensive for schmucks like us.

They interviewed the kid on TV. He's about 9 years old. He said ARod reached out and said "watch out there, buddy", and the kid said "Thank you" and ARod said "You're welcome". All this from the kid himself.
I'm not so sure about that. Michael Kay said that Arod told him in the clubhouse. This story is exactly the kind that Arod would exaggerate to look good.
