Newsday.com: A-Rod saves boy’s life

For the first time in his Yankees career, Alex Rodriguez was cheered in Boston, but it had nothing to do with anything he did on the baseball field.

Rodriguez risked his life Wednesday to save an 8-year-old boy from getting hit by a fast-moving truck on Newbury Street, the boy’s father, Joe McCarthy, said last night.

Jeter would have grabbed the kid, then dove into the stands.

Anyone else notice that A-Rod didn't save any kids until after he'd had a season of basking in the glow of Jeter's leadership?

ARod wasn't saving the kid from the truck... he was trying to steal his lunch money.

:-)

>"Jeter would have grabbed the kid, then dove into the stands."

Then he would have continued playing with a .875 Child-Saving Factor, been well below-average in Ultimate Kid Rescue Zone Rating, and performed significantly below expectation in the brand-new Probablistic Model of Child Retrieval Range.

But he'd still win the Golden Bassinet award.

A-Rod could have been seriously hurt, but that didn't stop him.

Sometimes, nicknames just seem ridiculous.

Although it kind of makes him sound like a superhero.

I'm sure to the kid, he is a superhero now. If I was that kid, I'd worship A-Rod as a god for the rest of my life, and beat the shit out of anyone who bad-mouthed him.

"Joe McCarthy."

Hmmmmmmm. I'll bet A-Rod staged the entire episode to improve his poor public image.

I wonder if there were any witnesses. Because this sounds a little exaggerated. Like the kind of thing that happens in the movies. I love A-Rods talent as a baseball player but I hate him off the field. I'm sure he must've done a nice deed but this sounds a little overdone.

...but heard the sound of a screeching truck, "oohs" from the crowd, then cheers. When he looked up, he saw his son in Rodriguez's arms as well as a few stunned expressions from onlookers

BTW, if the truck had hit A-Rod, the guy driving it would be a hero in Boston.

An interesting twist of fate, given that the truck driver, one Jeff Maier, is already a hero in the Bronx for his interference with a ball in play during the playoffs a number of years ago.

Ooh, sorry. Interference is a touchy subject right now. I take that back.

Let me ask you a question:
If Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot or Idi Amin heroically rescued a child from the path of a speeding truck, would we be willing to instantly wipe away all judgement of their past genocidal wrong-doings and instantly re-christen them heroes?

Didn't think so! So why is it that when A-Rod; someone that is arguably more evil and genocidal than Hitler, Pol Pot and Amin COMBINED, supposedly commits this act, we are willing to cut him so much slack and forgive him for all his past sins? WHY!?!?!?!?!

Actually, listening to the frontrunning ######## on NY radio, he'd be more of a hero in NY. Whatever makes you happy though (which is apparently nothing these days).

Good for ARod. It's nice to remember that these players' character cannot be summed up by how they hit in the clutch. Hope the fans remember that.

Because he put his talent for not getting a hit against Boston to good use.

Seriously, nice job Arod. A tip of the cap for a good deed. I read the headline and thought it was a joke.

I'm kidding but you guys have to admit this sounds a little fairy-taled up. No matter what it was a nice gesture by A-Rod and he even called over a few other players to talk to the family which is cool.

But when I heard Michael Kay speak about the incident during the broadcast of the game, my first thought was "gimme a break."

"Jeter would have grabbed the kid, then dove into the stands."

Not at all. It would have been the saddest incarnation ever of "past a diving Jeter", as his attempts at rescue came up just a bit short.

My theory is Jeter was there, but ARod cut in front of him to make the play when he realized the kid was out of Jeter's range.

Why? A-Rod doesn't hit against us. Plus his fielding is a bit shoddy.

All the best joke responses were already posted on SOSH, so I got nothin'. Some of the good ones:

"Did he yell at the kid to get a secondary lead?"

"Sheffield would have saved the kid but - and a lot of people don't know this - he has a bum shoulder."

"I wonder what he billed the parents for the 'ARod Experience' the kid was able to benefit from...."

"Apparently A-Rod had to step in after Rivera blew the save."

"Surprised he just didn't slap the kid out of the way."

My theory is Jeter was there, but ARod cut in front of him to make the play when he realized the kid was out of Jeter's range.

So how would the other Yankees react

Posada - He would have brought his kid with him. Everybody is safe as his face can stop a trck.

Giambi - He'd save the kid and then ask the boy if he'd inject him in the asss with 'roids as a payback.

Womack - He'd try to steal the truck, but get caught. Everybody dies.

Jeter - See Above

Matsui - Tell the kid to go to Japan, life's easier there.

Williams - He would try to calm the truck driver into stopping with some soothing guitar music because he wouldn't have the speed to save the boy.

Sheffield - He would go into a rage, hit the truck driver, nd forget about the boy. The boy would then ask his dad, "Who is R Kelly and what is ##########"

Steinbrenner - He wouldn't save the boy, but he'd buy the trucking company, fire the driver, and hire Emerson Fitapaldi to drive the route.

I for one don't care if it was merely a nice move by Arod or a heroic one, it is nice to see a positive story about baseball players. And while some of the comments above were funny (I liked 30 and the Jeter diving into the stands jokes), I think overall the board here is way too harsh. I don't like the Yankees (the team), but thinks this speaks well of Arod the person.

No, it's not fair, because it's not the same thing. A-Rod didn't walk into the clubhouse and say to a couple of reporters, "Hey, I saved a kids life today." If he had done that, sure he's open to criticism, but if the media already knew about it and asks him what happened, why shouldn't he comment?

Good for A-rod.

Well, I guess he's turning over a new leaf. Less than two years ago he threw 24 kids under a bus.

John, there are no buses in Texas. It was a giant Ford Expedition.

Was he supposed to say "no comment"?

Only when Scott Boras develops laryngitis.

This thread is awesome. I haven't laughed this hard at a BTF thread in a while.

To quote Mr. Show - "Charity is when you do something for people while other people are watching."

A-Rod didn't walk into the clubhouse and say to a couple of reporters, "Hey, I saved a kids life today."

Yeah, but the reporters were curious why he was wearing the blue and red tights and blasting the "Superman" theme on his boom box.

Of course, I guess there should be testing of baserunners for Kryptonite.

The reports that Varitek tried to stop him were false. The two were just having a disussion.

btw, Trot Nixon was at home sleeping at the time of the incident.

I would never let my kid walk in front of a truck. I'm not a deadbeat dad.
   90. smileyy Posted: April 15, 2005 at 03:51 PM (#1259239)
BTW, if the truck had hit A-Rod, the guy driving it would be a hero in Boston.

You misspelled "New York".

(Yes, I know that joke has been made, but I think my version is funnier.)
   91. Eli Walque Squad Posted: April 15, 2005 at 04:13 PM (#1259297)
The kid's dad might want to give A-Rod something, you know, for the effort.
   92. robinred Posted: April 15, 2005 at 04:39 PM (#1259358)
So, the dad is named "Joe McCarthy" the mom is named "Grace Bocchichio" which was the surname of the hostage negotiator clan in "The Godfather" and they are the "only Yankees fans on Martha's Vineyard."

I don't mean to sound too cynical, and it probably happened just this way, but...if this were April 1...
   93. AROM Posted: April 15, 2005 at 04:47 PM (#1259390)
Why all the cheap shots? What Rodriguez did was not especially heroic, but he probably did save a child's life.

I like the Yankees, can't stand the Red Sox, but I'm still real skeptical about this story. Sounds just too much like a Hollywood scene.

I'm waiting for the anti-Yankee blogs to find the holes in this story, but if its legit, great job A-Rod!
   94. The Bones McCoy of THT Posted: April 15, 2005 at 05:08 PM (#1259456)
Why all the cheap shots?

Because every thing else to do with A-Rod is too damned expensive for schmucks like us.

They interviewed the kid on TV. He's about 9 years old. He said ARod reached out and said "watch out there, buddy", and the kid said "Thank you" and ARod said "You're welcome". All this from the kid himself.

Just what I'd expect from Boston. The guy didn't even get out of his truck when he started the fight with A-Rod.

A-Rod didn't walk into the clubhouse and say to a couple of reporters, "Hey, I saved a kids life today."

I'm not so sure about that. Michael Kay said that Arod told him in the clubhouse. This story is exactly the kind that Arod would exaggerate to look good.
   98. Шĥy Posted: April 15, 2005 at 05:56 PM (#1259613)
Damn, ESPN just removed a quote from some girl at the end of their article that said Sheffield was roid raging.

whoops wrong thread sorry

I think Arod has this family on his payroll.

"It was more like a brush with God," said the Edgartown man, whose son, Patrick, was pulled from the path of a utility truck on Newbury Street on Wednesday afternoon.
