NJ.com - BREAKING NEWS: Delgado’s agent is insane

From Dan Graziano’s Blog…

Sloane wrote back at 12:40 p.m.:

“Apologize this retard, he’s making 16 this year WITH an option for next year @ 16 or a buyout @ 4. Nice research by you but then I guess that whole concept of fact finding escapes you huh? They didn’t teach that on the short bus did they?”

Seriously. Not making this up. I cut-and-pasted it.

Couple of thoughts here:

1. I don’t respond when readers call me names, but I’m not surprised when it happens. But this guy is an AGENT. I mean, somebody you’d expect, even if vindictive and hateful, to act like a professional in his dealings with the media. I guess we don’t have to wonder why he has no other clients.

2. If he thinks there’s a chance in hell the Mets are picking up a $16 million option on Delgado for 2009, he’s delusional on top of everything else.

Anyway, maybe I should have resisted, but I couldn’t. I wrote him back again:

“That a joke too? You’re a funny guy.”

And then, at 12:46 pm, in apparent celebration of Mother’s Day, David Sloane, the agent for Carlos Delgado, wrote back the following e-mail, which I present to you in its entirety:

“So’s your Mom.”

The part of yesterday's article to which Sloane appears to object:

The money is almost a wash -- the Mets are paying Delgado $12 million in salary this year plus a $4 million buyout on his 2009 option for a total of $16 million, and the Mariners are paying Sexson $14 million. Delgado has a no-trade clause, and could veto any deal, but maybe he's sick of the New York circus.

From cot's:
Carlos Delgado 1b
4 years/$52M (2005-08), plus 2009 option

acquired 11/05 in trade from Florida (as part of deal, Marlins paid Mets $7M - $1M in 2006, $2M in 2007, $4M in 2008)
05:$4M, 06:$13.5M, 07:$14.5M, 08:$16M, 09:$16M option ($4M buyout)

So Graziano seems to be correct, as the Mets are paying Delgado $12m and the Marlins $4m this year. And he's also correct (as any sane man would be) to assume the Mets would give Delgado the $4m buyout and kick him to the curb. Which leads me to wonder, was Delgado's agent drunk, under the infuence of prescription medication, or just plain stupid when he wrote Graziano?

All I can think is that he believes that acknowledging the existence of the buyout is some sort of slight on behalf of his client.

Which makes him no less insane, but insane people think things too . . .

Thank for inserting that comma...I didn't know what the heck he was trying to say and the comma didn't occur to me. I half-expected his last answer to be "all your baseball are belong to us" or something.

I think he was upset more about the idea of his client being paid 'only" 12 mil this year and not 16.

Everything the reporter wrote was true of course - the Mets are only paying Delgado 12 and for the Mets and their fans that is what matters - but one could read that as Delgado's total 08 salary being 12 mil

I'm guessing the agent will say he didn't think his emails were fair game to be published, which will make him look even dumber, if that's possible.

   17. Ravecc Posted: May 12, 2008 at 02:35 PM (#2777865)
The 16m option is dead – it is a vesting option based on MVP voting ranks that Carlos isn’t coming close to. They do still have a 12m mutual option with the same 4m buyout.

Highly doubtful the Mets bring him back even for an 8m net cost. His bat has looked a lot better the past couple of weeks (guy’s got to be the scariest #7 hitter in the league), but he must have left his glove in Puerto Rico.

And yeah, Sloane's nuts.

What else could he really say? I suppose he could mention that I was either accidently on/off his meds or planning to check into rehab. When you've said/done something really dumb in public, it seems like there's a pretty standard playbook.

   25. Ravecc Posted: May 12, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2777889)
He’s not going to care his emails were published. Delgado had him when he chose the Marlins over the Mets in 05. Right after the deal was announced, Sloane engaged Bob Klapisch in a series of emails just a little more civil than the above, and kept at it for quite some time. He’s not just nuts, he’s a publicity seeking nut.

Oh, and the 2009 12m option is a club option. Cot’s had it worded strangely.
   26. Aspiring One-Armed Economist (6 - 4 - 3) Posted: May 12, 2008 at 02:53 PM (#2777890)
This whole thing is pretty dumb, but there's an interesting display of regional disconnect within the comments...

One poster from Oregon claims that Delgado has been "Cadillacking" since 2006. Another poster from the East Coast objects because he believes that term to mean "showboating" and cites Delgado's refusal to give a curtain call after homering as evidence that Delgado is not "Cadillacking." The Oregon poster responds by saying that he considers "Cadillacking" to mean just perfunctorily showing up rather than exerting real effort.

Purely as a sociological exercise, I find it interesting when one person's status symbol is rejected as inferior by another...

Hey, you have to ditch/move the comma so it's punctuated like Sloane's:

“Apologize this retard, he’s making 16 this year WITH an option for next year @ 16 or a buyout @

(punctuate this retard)

That's a little too much knowledge of the opi of Vanilla Ice for my taste. :)

EDIT: Let me retract a bit. The plural of opus is either opuses or opera, according to Dictionary.com.
   37. Excel Hearts Choi Posted: May 12, 2008 at 03:34 PM (#2777935)
If you want to have some fun with commas, how about this:

“Apologize, this retard he’s making 16 this year WITH an option for next year..."

So now we have "Apologize" as the imperative to the author. Then "this retard" and "he" would be the same person (Delgado).
   38. PreservedFish Posted: May 12, 2008 at 03:34 PM (#2777937)
Is "opi" really the plural of "opus?" If it isn't it should be. And my year of Latin in 7th grade says that it checks out.

The plural of "opus" is "opera". It's a neutral declension instead of masculine.

I realize why the writer could published the email.

Why was it appropriate though? What purpose does it show other than to try to publicly embarrass someone and if that is the purpose, how is that legitimate or appropriate?

I realize people on chat boards like to write mean-spirited things back and forth to each other. That does not make the behavior acceptable.

Likewise, stercus, stercora, I see. The only "dirty" word I know in Latin I learned from my kids. Since they are both home for a short spell, I'll have to see if they remember the proper declension tonight at dinner.
Using nanny-bypass terminology, stercus is shiite, for those who care.

#38, #41 -- opus is third declension neuter. Plural is opera. The tricky part is that the -us ending looks like the far more common second declension masculine (e.g. focus, plural foci). If that's not confusing enough for you, there's also a first declension feminine noun opera, plural operae, which means more or less the same thing. Non illegitimi carborundum!

Count this as one vote for keeping "So's your mom" as a BTF in-joke, but relegating any phrase including the word "retard" to the scrap-heap. You don't have to spend much time around anyone with a developmental disability to come to view that word as extremely hurtful, nearly on a par with the N word.

I also remember being taught that one should pronounce every 'V' in Latin as a 'W.' And 'C' as 'K'

Thus: weeny, weedy, weeky

The more distance I have from that the more wrong that sounds. But my Latin teach probably knew better than I do.

He came and spoke at our school this year as part of our "Springfest" week (the theme of which was "when we were kids." So no, to clarify, my school does not find educational value in the speaking presence of Vanilla Ice. Simply entertainment) and admitted that whole schpiel was just an attempt to not get sued. I think the way he put it was, "Of course I didn't think it was any different. I was just trying to not get sued. I mean are you kidding me? Of course I copied it."

Aside from when I've posted as Backlasher, Randal, Admiral Ackbar, RossyCW, and Dan Szymborski, I've always posted under my own name.

You forgot tina, Mike Piazza, and the Bearded Wizard.

You don't have to spend much time around anyone with a developmental disability to come to view that word as extremely hurtful, nearly on a par with the N word.

Come to think of it, I have no doubt that RETARDO stopped posting (he did, didn't he? I don't read that many threads anymore) simply to spare my tender sensibilities.

gef, as much as I love Waits, I can easily see how anyone's mileage would vary. I revoke the call for a shunning.

That's perfectly OK, Edmundo. I'm a major fan of The Fall's Mark E Smith, who's definitely an, ummm, acquired taste, too.

Just to get this out of the way, it's octopuses if you want to be normal, octopodes if you want to be pedantic, and octopi if you want to be wrong.

I also remember being taught that one should pronounce every 'V' in Latin as a 'W.' And 'C' as 'K'

Thus: weeny, weedy, weeky

The more distance I have from that the more wrong that sounds. But my Latin teach probably knew better than I do.

Your teacher was teaching you Classical Latin. In Ecclesiastical Latin a "c" sometimes takes on the "ch" sound and "v's" are always vees.

Um, no, I don't remember such a ####-storm at all. Perhaps you could provide some links.

Of course, unless Graziano was actually one of said media horde decrying the blogger's actions, he isn't actually being a hypocrite here.
