NL Central Race: September 1, 2008

MLB.com: Marquis sharp, but Oswalt sharper

Roy Oswalt combined with Jose Valverde for a four-hit shutout, and Miguel Tejada tripled and scored two runs Monday to lead the Houston Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Cubs and extend their losing streak to three games. Oswalt (13-9) gave up a leadoff single to Geovany Soto in the third and a leadoff infield hit to Ryan Theriot in the sixth, struck out three and did not walk a batter

MLB.com: Gagne can’t hold lead for Sheets

Making their strongest push for the franchise’s first playoff berth since 1982, the Brewers held their breath as Sheets left his start early with left groin tightness, and the Mets pounced late on the Brewers bullpen to churn out a 4-2 win on Labor Day. Sheets did not seem worried about the ailment after the game, which took precedence over the outcome.

CHC 85-53
MIL 80-57 (4.5 GB; 5.5 game lead in the wildcard)

Tough day for Sheets. ERA's back under 3 but it was ugly (and probably shadow-aided). As for the groin injury, I was hoping he'd say it caught a little in pre-game warmups, because that'd make me feel better about his weak stuff. Sounds like it happened mid-game though.

Next two games: Backe vs. Zambrano, Wolf vs. Dempster.
Then a roadtrip to awful Cincinnati and fading St. Louis.
The Cubs offense will snap out of it sooner rather than later.
Lou has buried Bob "WHiP" Howry deep into the 'pen while Yost insists that Gagne is still his 8th inning setup man.

Color me unconcerned.

I'm only going to fret if the Cubs drop the next two while the Brewers take the next two. The offense has been uninspired lately, but I take into consideration that this stretch included facing Hamels, Myers, and Oswalt. The last two have been lights out their last several outings.

But as long as they take care of business the rest of this series and then at least win four of six on that road trip, I think the team will be in a good spot for the division race.

Considering last year's showing/chokejob in the playoffs against Arizona, I'd be worried.

Open the basement door, Fred. Your mom's calling you to dinner.

I think the biggest question for the team going forward is: whither Kosuke? Much as he's struggled, we don't have any better options going forward.

* Do something desperate and stick him in the 2nd spot for a week, and hope the dual prods of manager's faith and better pitches to hit in front of Lee and ARam are the ticket?
* Stick him in the 8 hole for the rest of the season and accept the black hole of offense w/occasional walk/single and hope he makes up for it on "D"?

I don't have a good answer.
