Both these teams need to shape up - the Cubs so that they lock down the division crown and don't limp into the playoffs again; the Brewers so that they make the WC and don't give it up to the NL East.
I'm going to be pretty disappointed if a) both teams don't make the playoffs (the Brewers are the ? here) and b) if they do make it, that they don't play like the absolute crap they're playing right now (both teams are currently at risk for this).
Cards are dinking around at .500 this month; it's the Brewers' determination to not win that's keeping the Cards around, rather than a St. Louis hot streak. The Cards are in danger of falling behind the 'stros themselves.
I've got to cling to something.
Also clinging to the fact that the White Sox kinda limped in, I recall the Yankees doing that in one of their years and I think even the 84 Tigers did.
I am not clinging to the fact that the 07 Cubs limped home.
At this point, I'm just hoping we make it to at least 90 wins. :-)
If CC loses the delicate psyche of the current squad will be shattered. The following will occur in no particular order:
--a road trip with a minimum of seven losses
--a clubhouse fight
--a surprise starter being used, most likely in place of Manny
--a starter being used in relief, most likely Dave Bush
--an ugly on the field confrontation between manager/player and/or player/player
Folks who enjoy soap operas are going to be thrilled. Because not only will Milwaukee lose the team will do so in spectacularly melodramatic fashion awash with pathos. Viewers will watch from afar and be they in Philly, St. Louis, Chicago, New York or Houston all will look on with mouths agape and then wince in empathy with each passing horrific event pushes the team further away from the promised land.
There will be last few desperate victories the final week of the season but it will be too little, too late. The Crew will have failed in its noble quest.
Personally, I will sigh heavily, shake my head, walk outside, climb the pyre I have built in the backyard, curse Ned Yost to the heavens and light myself on fire.
I do not make the future. I merely foretell..........
I think we'd all prefer if you throw Ned on the pyre and curse yourself.
Eric Gagne can provide the accelerant. Not, uh, that I think you should do that. Many would be upset if you did that.
Fat is all kinds of flammable.
Also, the extra cloth in his pants would function as a makeshift wick.
Also, I called the Reds dropping the little pop fly between the catcher and the pitcher in last night's game. That's a total Dusty Baker team thing to do.
To continue the metaphor, Harveys would have to leave town for the fire because clearly Milwaukee has no spark right now.
As Tom Petty might say:
God, it's so painful.
Something that's so close,
But still so far out of reach...
