NL Central race: September 9, 2008

MLB.com: Cubs let go of early lead in loss to Cards

Brendan Ryan scored on a fielder’s choice, dodging an attempted tag at the plate, with one out in the ninth inning Tuesday to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs, who lost for the eighth time in the last nine games.

MLB.com: Brewers fall to Reds in 11 innings

Ray Durham came off the bench and delivered a pinch-hit, three-run homer that tied the game in the seventh inning, but the Reds scored in the top of the 11th inning for a 5-4 win at Miller Park that cost the Brewers a chance to extend their lead in the National League Wild Card race over Philadelphia and to gain a game on the NL Central-leading Cubs.

All three teams lost Tuesday.

CHC 86-58 [1-6 in SEPT]
MIL 82-63 [2-7 in SEPT] (4.5 GB)

Once again, the Brewers don't take advantage of the Cubs' largess. This race is getting stupid.

Dear lord. This is starting to look like a repeat of last year's "No, you take it!" race to the finish line.

Both these teams need to shape up - the Cubs so that they lock down the division crown and don't limp into the playoffs again; the Brewers so that they make the WC and don't give it up to the NL East.

I'm going to be pretty disappointed if a) both teams don't make the playoffs (the Brewers are the ? here) and b) if they do make it, that they don't play like the absolute crap they're playing right now (both teams are currently at risk for this).

There's gotta be a better word than "race"

Cardinals a mere three out in the loss column. Dun dun dun...

More worried about the 'stros than the Cards. The 'stros are the ones that have that "team that gets really hot in September to claim the wildcard" vibe going on.

Cards are dinking around at .500 this month; it's the Brewers' determination to not win that's keeping the Cards around, rather than a St. Louis hot streak. The Cards are in danger of falling behind the 'stros themselves.

In addition to wanting the Cubs to win the division, I'll be annoyed if they surrender the best overall record to someone in the east.

Not much to add today. I was at Miller Park (again) tonight and it was painful. Listening to AM 1250 on the way home, the first caller stated he could explain what was wrong with the Brewers if he had an hour. Awesome.

The Cubs have still outscored the league (by half a run over #2!) and are still #2 in RA.

I've got to cling to something.

Also clinging to the fact that the White Sox kinda limped in, I recall the Yankees doing that in one of their years and I think even the 84 Tigers did.

I am not clinging to the fact that the 07 Cubs limped home.

At this point, I'm just hoping we make it to at least 90 wins. :-)

I have attended most of the homestand. The apprehension around the team is palpable.

If CC loses the delicate psyche of the current squad will be shattered. The following will occur in no particular order:

--a road trip with a minimum of seven losses

--a clubhouse fight

--a surprise starter being used, most likely in place of Manny

--a starter being used in relief, most likely Dave Bush

--an ugly on the field confrontation between manager/player and/or player/player

Folks who enjoy soap operas are going to be thrilled. Because not only will Milwaukee lose the team will do so in spectacularly melodramatic fashion awash with pathos. Viewers will watch from afar and be they in Philly, St. Louis, Chicago, New York or Houston all will look on with mouths agape and then wince in empathy with each passing horrific event pushes the team further away from the promised land.

There will be last few desperate victories the final week of the season but it will be too little, too late. The Crew will have failed in its noble quest.

Personally, I will sigh heavily, shake my head, walk outside, climb the pyre I have built in the backyard, curse Ned Yost to the heavens and light myself on fire.

I do not make the future. I merely foretell..........

I think we'd all prefer if you throw Ned on the pyre and curse yourself.

I will admit to only half-watching the Cards/Cubs game last night for the first five innings or so, puttering around doing other things at the same time. But I perked up when I realized that Pujols was up as the tying run, and from there on it was pretty exciting. It's amazing how freeing it is to truly believe your team is out of the race, then to realize that they're not quite dead yet--every win is pure gravy.

Eric Gagne can provide the accelerant. Not, uh, that I think you should do that. Many would be upset if you did that.

Fat is all kinds of flammable.

Also, the extra cloth in his pants would function as a makeshift wick.

Are the Brewers the slobbiest looking team in the league? Seriously.

Also, I called the Reds dropping the little pop fly between the catcher and the pitcher in last night's game. That's a total Dusty Baker team thing to do.

Oh, and I would like to thank NTNGod for putting together these race threads. It is an excellent idea.

To continue the metaphor, Harveys would have to leave town for the fire because clearly Milwaukee has no spark right now.

As Tom Petty might say:

God, it's so painful.
Something that's so close,
But still so far out of reach...

Ned's been just as guilty. Sac bunt after sac bunt, to no visible purpose. He just loves to give up outs.
