NL East race: September 13, 2008

MLB.com: Santana’s start spoiled by rally in eighth

Johan Santana did [pitch well]; the bullpen did not. And the end result of Saturday’s doubleheader matinee did not prove to be quite so even, with the Braves parlaying Omar Infante’s tie-breaking sacrifice fly into a 3-2 win.
...
By striking out four Braves, walking two and allowing nine hits, [Santana] ensured that he would remain unbeaten since June 28. Yet after the bullpen lost his lead, Santana found himself stuck with a no-decision instead of his seventh straight win.

MLB.com: Phils win, two back in East, Wild Card

Cole Hamels’ solid outing was backed by three hits from Jimmy Rollins as the Phillies beat the Brewers, 7-3, at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday afternoon.

NYM 83-64 [7-3 in SEPT]

For one of the first times since he took over, I blame Manuel for that first game loss. He kept Johan in, when pitch count or not, he was gassed. He had worked out of jams repeatedly and he needed to come out. The arson squad always does better starting an inning than coming in with men on. I'm just glad this group has resiliency and didn't drop the nightcap.

I'm pretty confident that the Mets will close out stronger than last year. The starting pitching is stronger and having Niese available as depth will help. At worst, this rotation goes 4-deep and should be able to hold on to this lead.

The Mets scored all of 2 runs against Hampton and the Braves' bullpen.

They deserved to lose.

It's astonishing how low the expectations are for the Mets down the stretch. Last week they salvage the last of a three game set; today they split a double-header. Each time the hook that the media follows is: it's a new year! The Mets didn't utterly collapse!

Man, did Bobby run a crappy line up out there for the second half of the DH? No Chipper,McCann or Yunel! And they still would have scored some if Infante wasn't batting cleanup. Gah!
