NL East race: September 21, 2008

MLB.com: Phils win, lead East by 1 1/2 games

So with a 5-2 win at Dolphin Stadium in front of 28,173, the Phillies moved closer to securing a postseason berth for the second straight season. They sit 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mets in the National League East, and Philaelphia’s magic number for guaranteeing a ticket for October is three.

MLB.com: Lead gets away in Mets’ loss to Braves

Schoeneweis was the lefty whom manager Jerry Manuel entrusted to preserve a one-run lead, and he appeared to be a wise choice. His statistics against the Braves were stellar. His numbers in September were even better.

So Manuel made the choice, and what transpired next at Turner Field could eventually become evidence of another September collapse. For now it served only to provide fuel for Sunday’s 7-6 loss, sending the Mets a little lower down the National League East ladder and shaving their Wild Card lead to 1 1/2 games.

PHI 88-68 [13-6 in SEPT]

in the event that the mets don't make post-season this will not be a collapse similar to last year. That was truly a debacle of epic proportions. This year it wouldn't be any more of a story than what the Brew-Crew is doing, had the Mets not barfed up the division last september.

(ESPN still lists them 74% probable to make it....and the only reason I use that is because BP doesn't update after every game)

Assuming the Phillies win the division, if the Mets go 3-4 in their next seven games, the Brewers would have to go 5-1 to win the Wild Card. I don't see that happening. I'd say the Mets can be comfortable at this point since they pretty much have a post-season berth anyway. It's just that they have to play the Cubs instead of the Dodgers, and all things considered, that may not be that bad of a situation.

In that scenario, 4-2 by the Brewers against the Pirates (who they've beaten 12 straight times at Miller Park) and Cubs forces a playoff. Tiebreakers don't factor in unless both teams are already guaranteed playoff spots.

And it's hard to see the Mets doing better than 3-4 at the rate they've been going. Of course, if that's the case, who cares if they make the playoffs?

Brad Lidge has had an amazing season. No blown saves, no losses. 40 saves, 2 wins.

Way better season than K-rod's, and no one is even talking about it

I said it before and I'll say it again: we're going to take the division.

And even if you don't think we are, if you don't care if the Mets make the playoffs, I'm going to pull a Chris Dial here:

You are not a real fan of the team.

You are not a real fan of the team.
I believe this describes 99% of Mets fans

How dare anyone accuse Vaux of not being a real fan of one of his half-dozen favoritest teams.

Guilty as charged.

They're 10-8 in September, so at the rate they've been going, better than 3-4 is pretty easy to see.

On edit: And 10 of those 18 were on the road, the last 7 are at home. The Mets are 41-40 on the road this year, 45-29 at home.

Only a fan untethered to reality could believe this.

The Mets likely will take the WC. They are not winning the division. Phillies won't do worse than 4-2 at home against the Braves (who they are 13-2 against)and Nats (who are the Nats). The Mets are not going 6-1 against the JV Cubs and the Marlins.
   13. Harris Posted: September 22, 2008 at 11:25 AM (#2949789)
The mets only have to win two more games than the Phils the rest of the way to get the division, AND they plan one more game.

The converse of that is however, that the Mets can only lose one less game than the Phils, and the Mets play one more game.

Nothing like throwing Niese into the pressure cooker. Oh jeez.
