NL East race: September 23, 2008

MLB.com: Phils’ celebration delayed by Braves

The Braves threw a left hook at [the Phillies] on Tuesday, delaying what might be an inevitable champagne celebration with a 3-2 win at Citizens Bank Park.

The Mets defeated the Cubs, so the Phillies’ lead in the National League East shrunk to 1 1/2 games and their magic number remained at four for clinching the division.

MLB.com: Santana stays in, lifts Mets past Cubs

The Mets claimed their first win of the season against the Cubs on Tuesday, topping the National League Central champions, 6-2, while keeping pace in the race for the postseason… Johan Santana, who joked with manager Jerry Manuel and said “if it’s cool, I can throw 225,” lasted a career-high 125 pitches in eight innings and allowed two runs while striking out 10.

Wow, the Braves actually won a game against the Phils. Impressive.

Impressive??? More like miraculous. Especially with Hamels starting for Philly.

One game in the loss column. I guess the division is back in play. But to be honest, with Zambrano and Harden going the next two days, I still think it's a long shot. I'll be thrilled if we're within a game when the weekend comes.

The Braves keep their quest to avoid 90 losses alive with today's win. 3-1 in the remaining games still looks like a tall order for this shitty team.

I maintain that we are going to win the division. I will not waver until destroyed by the math.

(I'm reading Stephenson's newest.)

Funny. MY mama told me, "You better shop around." And I didn't spend any $121M on Mike Hampton. Of course, neither did the Braves . . . . ;-)

So did the Braves finally break the one run road loss streak tonight or did they do it some time during the last month?

Their streak was snapped earlier this month...against the Mets of course.

I'm pretty sure they did it in this game, Neil. Against the Mets, of course.

Sigh.

I admire you. I admit I wasn't smart enough to handle anything past Cryptonomicon.

Snow Crash was beyond awesome, though.

It's so traumatic I blocked it from memory.

sigh indeed.

delaying what might be an inevitable

Yeah, this is a pretty poor turn of phrase.

I had mixed feelings about it, but it did hold my attention well enough that I got through it in four days.

I am surprised by the wording in the Phillies article. If the Brewers win today, they'll only be two games up on the Brewers for a playoff spot. That's hardly insurmountable.
   15. Darren  Posted: September 23, 2008 at 09:55 PM (#2952395)
It's easier to surmount that 6.5 with 12 to play.

I'm liking it so far, but I'm working 80-hour weeks so it's taking me longer. However, that is allowing me to process a bit better, I think.

Gabe Kapler irritates me.

I'm about halfway through Anathem (after re-reading Cryptonomicon and The Baroque Cycle earlier this year) and so far I'm enjoying it. I don't think it's quite as good as his earlier works, but it's still better than most of the other new books out there.
   18. Lassus  Posted: September 23, 2008 at 10:30 PM (#2952457)
I'm going to (someday) be taking some kind of insane vacation and then return to a normal work cycle, so I'm looking forward to re-reading the Baroque Cycle, actually. And I never re-read anything.

But back to baseball. I'm kind of annoyed that the Brewers took away a bit of our breathing space by not losing tonight, HOWEVER, I'll be happy to have them assist us in helping the Phillies not make the playoffs at all.

HOWEVER, I'll be happy to have them assist us in helping the Phillies not make the playoffs at all.

Oh, wouldn't that be the most wonderful turn of events??? The Mets and Brewers -- last year's poster children for Tight Throat Syndrome -- both come charging down the stretch at the season's last, winning their last six apiece to finish 92-70 (Mets) and 91-71 (Brewers) to win the East and the WC, while the Phillies fade away to a 90-72 finish, as Jimmy Rollins slinks away to contemplate his coming trade to the Nationals?

Oh, it's too delicious to contemplate. So of course, it's not going to happen. But it'd be awesome.

I still think that the only difference between the Mets in 2008 and in 2007 is that they have Santana to go out and slap everyone when things look bleakest. It may not rouse them to a division title but it looks like enough to keep them from pissing away the playoffs.

If only he could teach the rest of them how to hit the ball twice.

Joe Simpson on the Braves broadcast said something I found interesting. He read somewhere (he gave citation but I've forgotten) that if MLB games were 6 innings long, the Mets would have an 11 game lead on the Phillies. Now, of course, if the games were only 6 innings long lots of other changes would occur, but that was a really staggering number to me.
