NL West race: September 10, 2008

MLB.com: Manny’s taters help Dodgers pad lead

Manny Ramirez homered twice, winning starter Derek Lowe left after getting hit with a comebacker, and Brad Penny made his first appearance in a month Wednesday night as the Dodgers beat the Padres, 7-2. The win extended the Dodgers’ division lead to 3 1/2 games and trimmed their magic number to win the division to 14.

MLB.com: Giants hand D-backs sixth straight loss

On Wednesday afternoon, it was a two-out, two-run triple by Eugenio Velez that did in the D-backs, as the Giants rallied for a 4-3 win at AT&T Park.

It was the six straight loss for the D-backs, who flew home to Phoenix with an 0-6 trip packed in their luggage for just the third time in franchise history. Both of the other winless trips came in 2004… The D-backs have now lost 10 straight on the road.

The D'backs do seem hellbent to repeat the "2007 Milwaukee Brewers Story", with the red-hot start, the losing the big season-long lead late, the road futility, shaky defense, etc...

I didn't think it was a real happy story the first time I saw it (ending was a downer, in particular), so I didn't think it was remake material, frankly.

I'm torn. On the one hand, this whole Giants winning and D-bags losing is nice. On the other hand, the whole helping Dodgers winning the division doesn't sit right with me.

Brad Penny pitched tonight for the first time in rather a long time. Faced three batters. Didn't get anyone out.

Manny Ramirez owns every team in the NL West.

Dodgers win, 7-2 final.

#2 -- don't worry, you'll have your chance to screw the Dodgers later. The Dodgers close their season against the Giants in San Francisco.

Ramirez is a Manny among men - a pair of two run homeruns tonight, in a tough ballpark to hit homeruns.

scareduck - unless the Dbacks start playing better, it won't matter. They are getting shell-shocked. Unless their bullpen starts actually protecting leads, and their front of the rotation starts performing - they are in serious trouble. Their offense just doesn't score enough to consistently make up for their #2 starter going only 4 innings, like today.

I am rooting for the Diamondbacks to get outscored on the season. I think it'd be kind of funny for their GM to have seven years remaining on his contract despite not having yet to build a team that had outscored their opponents.

On the other hand...Shawn Estes. I didn't even know that guy was back in the majors.

Snapshot comparison of defense:
LA third basemen: 33 double plays, 15 errors.
AZ third basemen: 23 double plays, 29 errors.

The way Manny's playing for the Dodgers, I half expect him to get a spot start on the mound and throw a no-hitter. That's about all that's left for him to do.

I think, the way Manny has played and the direction is hitting is taking, he isn't that good anymore.

LOL. I think I figured it out. Kevin is actually Peter Gammons' online moniker.
