NL West race: September 12, 2008

MLB.com: Billingsley earns win No. 15 for LA

Chad Billingsley picked up his 15th victory and the Dodgers’ their 11th in the past 12 games with a 7-2 win over the Rockies on Friday night, trimming the magic number to clinch the division to 13.

Billingsley allowed two runs over six innings to raise his record to 15-10. He’s won his past three starts and six of his past seven decisions.

MLB.com: Webb wins 20th with gem vs. Reds

Brandon Webb was masterful, as he allowed just five hits and no runs in eight innings Friday night against the Reds and paved the way for a 3-2 D-backs victory in front of 29,046. It was Webb’s 20th win of the season, making him the first National Leaguer to reach 20 wins since 2005.

Never under-estimate Bob Melvin's fragile psyche. He moves in mysterious ways.
I fully expect both Rauch and Lyon to suck in meaningful situations tomorrow.

I'm all in favor of the Dbacks using better pitchers when they have three run leads with an inning left. Let Rauch and Lyons throw higher leverage innings.

D Backs squeaked by tonight, but Dodgers won, so elimination number still goes down to 13

Dodgers have 15 games left. If they go just 8-7, D backs have to go 13-3 to win the division outright, or at least 12-4 to tie it. And they lost the coin flip today, so if there is a one game playoff, it would be in LA . :(

The D backs are not going 13-3 anytime soon...The D backs only chance is for the Dodgers to collapse RIGHT NOW and go 5-10 or something like that. We've seen them slump....it COULD happen. But they are playing pretty darn good baseball right now.

I hate the Dodgers.

But I ain't no fan of the snakes, either.

Given the unappetizing choice of which team to not root against, I have to say that the prospect of Joe Torre and Manny Ramirez going to the playoffs together is amusing in a shake-your-head kind of way.

If by some strange chance the Dodgers were to meet the Red Sox in the World Series, can you imagine the scene when Manny returns to Fenway for the Series? The spectacle, the publicity, the reams of mindless columns?

Bud would be creaming in his jeans until December.
