NL West race: September 13, 2008

MLB.com: Kershaw cruises in Dodgers’ win

Rookie Clayton Kershaw allowed one run over six innings and the Dodgers trimmed their magic number to 12 with a 5-1 win over the Rockies on Saturday night. Kershaw (4-5) scattered four singles and struck out seven. The Dodgers have won six of his past eight starts and 12 of their past 13 games overall.

MLB.com: Owings beats D-backs with bat

Former D-backs pitcher Micah Owings got a pinch-hit, go-ahead RBI double off Tony Pena in the top of the 10th, as the Reds topped the D-backs, 3-2, at Chase Field Saturday night in front of 45,075. It was Owings’ first Major League appearance since July 28, when he was a member of the D-backs.

In the ARI/CIN game, Owings pinch-hit for the Reds in the 10th, and hit a go-ahead double. Ouch.

Maybe should have waited a bit longer to complete that Dunn deal.

Wow. That's fairly brutal.

Also, Tim Lincecum pitched his first career complete game, shutting out the Padres in San Diego. He allowed four hits and three walks and hit a batter while fanning twelve. He threw 138 pitches...

I was wondering how the D'backs managed to draw 45K (particularly against the Reds): double promotions!

He threw 138 pitches...

Is Dusty managing the Giants again?

Weird, ESPN says the following:

Lincecum (17-3) hadn't thrown a complete game in his first 54 starts, but sailed through nine innings against the Padres, needing just 86 pitches.

MLB's gameday has 138. Since he threw 20 pitches in the 9th, I would go with the higher total.

Is Dusty managing the Giants again?

He threw over 130 his last start too if I remember correctly, for the same purpose -- Bochy has desperately been trying to get him a CG. Last time out he unraveled a bit in the ninth and Bochy finally had to pull him after he walked a guy after a long AB. This time he breezed through the 8th and entered the 9th with 118 pitches, so Bochy left him in. He gave up a few cheap singles with two outs before striking out Edgar Gonzalez to end it. His control was a little off early on, so he kept going 1-0 and 2-0 on hitters, but he started pouring in strikes towards the end, and was still sitting at 94 in the 9th.

Weird, ESPN says the following:

Yeah, they're wrong; I was watching the game. Roy Halladay he ain't.

I'm torn between wanting a little dude with wicked stuff to succeed and wanting the Giants to pay for their stupidity. Torn like Lincecum's labrum.

I don't care how stupid the Giants have been. There's no part of me whatsoever that wants the coolest pitcher in the NL to get hurt.

Tim is VERY cool. I put a poster of him on my bedroom on my wall. It says "Tim Lincecum" on it.

I don't think there really needs to be an "NL West Race" thread every night. There is not more race.

While listening to the AZ announcers tonight, I heard the stats for the team's second basemen since O-Dog went down.
Those stats are... not good. Like, batting average below .200 not good.

Linceum indeed threw 138 pitches. He threw 86 strikes.
