NL West race: September 15, 2008

MLB.com: Kuroda, Dodgers cruise past Pirates

It would have been fittingly historic had Hiroki Kuroda been allowed to finish out Monday night’s 8-2 win over the Pirates, but Dodgers manager Joe Torre needed those last two innings to address two question marks… Kuroda gave way to another countryman, Takashi Saito, who was followed to the mound by Brad Penny, as Torre took a lopsided win and turned it into an impromptu rehab assignment for the comebacking closer and Opening Day starter.
...
Juan Pierre had three runs on three hits, including his first homer in nearly two years.

MLB.com: Dunn’s homer boosts D-backs

Adam Dunn stroked a game-winning two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning as the D-backs edged the Giants, 3-1, in front of 25,969 at Chase Field on Monday night.

LAD 78-72 [11-2 in SEPT]
ARI 73-76 [4-9 in SEPT] (4.5 GB)

If the Dodgers go 6-6 over the last 12 games, Arizona needs to go 11-2 to force a one game playoff at Dodger Stadium on Monday 9/29.

And the Dodgers now have as many home games remaining as road games - the hard part of their late season schedule was supposed to be the number of road games, but they've weathered that okay.

And the pitching matchups are such that they only have to face Lincecum once - he is scheduled to pitch Thursday in Phoenix.

Incidentally, while Saito had good results - Penny didn't. Could be very costly for him, since the Dodgers have to decide whether to pick up his option. Ideally, he'll be back in shape by the playoffs, and the Dodgers can have both of them blazing in the bullpen - especially since it looks like Kuo might be out.

A team 3 games under .500 is in the playoff race with 10 games to go. #### I hate the division system.

I'd be surprise if Penny makes the postseason roster. (Knocks on wood.)
Just a guess:
Kuroda
Billz
Kershaw
Lowe
Maddux
Saito
Broxton
Biemel
Wade
Park
Between Kuo, Proctor, Troncoso and Penny, who gets in? Kuo, if he's healthy, and then?

I'm not sure how many pitchers the Dodgers would actually carry in the playoffs - maybe 10, maybe 11.
