NL West race: September 18, 2008

MLB.com: On Loney’s hit, Dodgers prevail in 12

If things break just right, the Dodgers can mark their 50th anniversary in Los Angeles by clinching the division title at home after edging the Pirates on Thursday in 12 innings, 4-3, and trimming the magic number to seven… Now the club returns for the final homestand of the regular season against teams with the two worst records in the division, San Francisco and San Diego.

MLB.com: D-backs edge out Giants ace

Adam Dunn hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth for the go-ahead run off Tim Lincecum as the D-backs beat the Giants, 3-2, in front of 34,323 at Chase Field on Thursday night.

LAD 80-73 [13-3 in SEPT]
ARI 76-76 [7-9 in SEPT] (3.5 GB)

Poor Lincecum took the loss when Velez misplayed a 2-out lineout into a 2-run triple...

118 pitches.

Poor Lincecum? Poor RJ didn't get the win, again...
The Dbacks offense still sucks. It's a miracle they've won 4 straight games...

Unfortunately for AZ, they're 3 1/2 games back with 10 to play
And they're facing the Rockies (6) and Cards (4)

On the other hand, the Dodgers are facing the Giants (6) and Padres (3)
There is no race in the NL west, kids. The race ended 10 days ago

Say the Dodgers get sloppy and go 4-5 down the stretch.
Arizona would have to win 8 of 10 just to force a tiebreaker in LA.
It's not in the bag, but I am confident.

Especially early on, Lincecum was just pouring in strikes, which cost him a few strikeouts but helped him get deeper into the game. I bet we'll see more of that next year, at least until the BIP luck catches up to him.

At one point, I recall, 50 of 59 pitches were for strikes.
He's amazing - and I hope Bochy doesn't kill him.

Bochy never even had anyone warming up in the pen until after Dunn's go ahead hit in the 8th.

Amazing.

Well, again tonight he looked just fine in the eighth. I didn't see a significant drop in velocity -- in fact the next few pitches after Dunn's single were the hardest fastballs he threw all night.

Fernando Valenzuela looked fine, too. . . till he didn't.
