MLB.com: Dodgers inch closer to title despite loss

Bengie Molina homered and drove in four runs Friday night and Barry Zito outpitched Greg Maddux in the Giants’ 7-1 win over the Dodgers, whose magic number was reduced to six anyway with Arizona’s loss to the Rockies.

MLB.com: Pair of at ‘em balls vex D-backs in loss

If there was one moment from Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Rockies that encapsulated the way things have gone for the D-backs this month, it was Conor Jackson’s at-bat in the eighth inning. With a runner at first and nobody out, Jackson laced a bullet down the first-base line that found its way into the glove of Garrett Atkins, who then stepped on first to double up David Eckstein.

I'm sorry, but THAT was the moment that encapsulated AZ's night? What about leaving the bases loaded in the 4th and the 9th? We're to believe the Dbacks got unlucky tonight. Bullsh!t. They sucked on offense, again, like they've sucked for a long time. They've lost 11 straight games on the road. 11! Their last road win was on August 16 at Houston. I'm sick and tired of hearing how they just got unlucky again. It's garbage. The hitters absolutely suck. Period. End of story.

And they've lost every game Scherzer has started. Obviously he is to blame for their season. They should waive him, or maybe trade him to the Dodgers for a middle reliever, who can help the DBacks win.

Maddux has been not good since coming over to LA. 1-4 with 1 quality start (a no-decision) in 6 GS, ERA of 5.77
I'm wondering if he sees any postseason action.

I can't find one mention anywhere of the fact that Maddux just passed 5000 IP. What little respect such a milestone gets, especially for a sport that loves big round numbers. He might very well be the last 5000IP pitcher for a very long time.

Is there any sense that Penny would get a shot at the postseason rotation?

YEah, it's too bad; Maddux looks done. How is the Dodger bullpen? Would he be a reasonable one inning guy?

The Dodgers have far better relief options than to impress Maddux into a late-innings role.

I was just wondering what the Dodger rotation would be for the playoffs. Lowe/Billingsley/Kuroda/Kershaw?/Penny?

Penny is getting another cortisone shot and he thinks he's done for the year.

Thanks, Bob.

Kershaw has had it pretty rough the last four weeks. He is also just 20 years old and (probably) more susceptible to fatigue at the end of the year. It would be hard to fault the Dodgers for using Maddux as a fourth starter or shortening to a three man rotation in October.

There are two off-days in every Divisional Series, so no one will be using a fourth starter in the first round of the playoffs. Maddux might pitch out of the pen, but this isn't an issue until the NLCS.

If I were the Dodgers, I'd shut Maddux down now, and tell him to start scouting the Mets and Phillies. Give him three weeks to plan, and I bet he'd go Ehmke all over their asses.

That came to my mind as well.

Unless guys are going on 3 days rest that's not true #11. If everyone goes on regular rest, every team but 1 AL series will need 4 starters.

14-

Thanks for the correction! I misread the initial announcement.

Are either the Mets or Phillies prone to struggling against LHP?
If so, that could determine whether Maddux or Kershaw gets that fourth start.
