NL West race: September 20, 2008

MLB.com: Manny belts two to sink wild Giants

Manny Ramirez powered the Dodgers to another victory on Saturday, hitting a pair of homers and driving in five in Los Angeles’ 10-7 win over San Francisco at Dodger Stadium that reduced the club’s magic number to five.

MLB.com: Drew’s homer lifts D-backs over Rox

Stephen Drew will likely never forget the two-run homer he hit in the ninth inning to lead the D-backs to a 5-3 win over the Rockies on Saturday night at Coors Field. The reason he’ll remember it, though, is because of what happened on the pitch right before.

Brian Fuentes missed with a pitch, and Drew dropped his bat and started jogging down to first base thinking he’d drawn a walk to put runners at first and second. The only problem with that was it was only ball three.

LAD 81-74 [14-4 in SEPT]
ARI 77-77 [8-10 in SEPT] (3.5 GB)

Will the Dodgers actually surge enough to not only make it into the playoffs but also end up looking almost like a legitimately good team?

FWIW, this guarantees that the NL West winner will have a winning record. Even if the teams ended up tied at 81-81, there would be a one game playoff, so there will be at least an 82 game winner from this division. Likely higher, but that is now the minimum.

Has Manny ever forgotten the count? Was Drew being more clueless than Manny?

Not if the Dodgers finished 81-81 (highly unlikely, granted), and the D'backs won 80 or less.

After falling behind, 2-0, Ramirez put the Dodgers back on top with a three-run homer in the third, his 15th as a Dodger to join Fred McGriff, Mark McGwire, David Justice and Carlos Beltran as the only players to hit 15 homers with two different teams in the same season.

I find this to be a very interesting bit of trivia.
