MLB.com: Slipping Padres drop 10th straight ballgame

In an attempt to breathe new life into a suddenly reeling ballclub, the Padres turned to the music of Michael Jackson, which echoed through PETCO Park as each San Diego batter stepped to the plate. But even the upbeat tunes of the King of Pop couldn’t snap the Padres out of their recent funk.

San Diego’s season-worst losing streak reached 10 games on Sunday, as the Padres were swept by the Rockies after dropping a 4-2 decision in front of a crowd of 23,250.

MLB.com: [Jonathan] Sanchez’s gem puts NL West lead in reach

[Jonathan] Sanchez actually pitched capably for the second start in a row, allowing three hits in seven shutout innings. And the Giants wholeheartedly embraced his performance, which furthered their bid for a postseason berth as they outlasted the Dodgers, 3-0.

Juan Uribe homered for the second consecutive game to help San Francisco defeat Los Angeles for the seventh time in nine games and capture its third series in a row against its arch-rivals.

I hope people are wrong about Carlos Gonzalez not being able to have a good career given his K/BB rates so far. He's an exciting player--it's fun when the toolsy guys work out. Obviously his last two months are not the norm, but his career OPS+ is now 120. I'd take that heading into his age 25-28 years.

Little Pony's K/W rate has improved over the course of the season: It was 76/16 before the All-Star break, and 39/14 since the break in about half the ABs. With the Rockies having 16 of their last 26 games at home, he could finish pretty strong, too. (I'm really going to push the "Little Pony" nickname, bestowed on him by the now-departed Brad Hawpe, because it's so much better than CarGo.)

There was a note on ESPN that the Padres are the first team since the 1932 Pirates to have a ten-game losing streak and still be in first place the whole time.

The Giants are trying to set some kind of record for backing into the division.

Although Sanchez is pitching great tonight (knock on wood), so that would bring it down to 1 game.

Though those Pirates lost 4 straight after they finally broke their 10-game skid, falling out of first in the process. They ended up 4 behind the Cubs.

What was the last team to survive an 11+ game losing streak in first place?

Looking closer...that Pirate team was weird. They went from 10 games back on May 19 to 6 games up on July 29, all the way to 7 games back on August 25.
