N.Y. Daily News: A-Rod says critics are off base

“One thing I learned from Joe Torre and Lou Piniella was that a manager will never get mad at you for playing the game right, hustling and making an aggressive mistake,” Rodriguez said before Wednesday night’s win over Toronto. “They’ll get mad at you if you don’t push the envelope.”

A-Rod’s hustle - or lack thereof - was a popular topic on sports radio Wednesday, as replays showed the third baseman pause before leaving the batter’s box. Rodriguez shot down the theory that he wasn’t going all-out, explaining his momentary hesitation.

“There was a delay because I didn’t know where the ball was,” Rodriguez said, adding that he initially thought it was a foul ball. “Usually when there’s a lack of hustle, it’s not in the ninth inning down by one. Whoever is saying that doesn’t know about baseball. That doesn’t bother me one bit.”

But I’m sure it bothers the dissolving liver snaps out of Gene Collier…

Good to see some A-Rod bashing. It's been too long.

I was too drunk to notice if he was confused or he dragged ass but no one would care if Lyle Overbay didn't make an absolutely perfect slide and throw to get A-rod at second. That was a super cool play.

FWIW, the RLYW guys, who love A-rod, were mad at him, so maybe he did mess up.

I was also similarly handicapped, but I guess you have to say it's an overall bad play because of the hesitation after contact...even though Overbay had to make a pretty nice play to get the job done

Obviously he didn't know where the ball was. He obviously wasn't standing and watching a possible HR, and even the laziest runners don't stand at the plate when a clear hit is dropping in. There may be problems with the play but how anyone would think his initial pause was a lack of hustle is beyond me.

The only problem with that defense is that if it wasn't an obvious foul ball (or he didn't know where it was), then he should be hustling down the line.

Most players probably don't, because when it turns out to be massively foul, you look like a tool.

Jeter would've run.

I saw the reply at mlb.com and i don't think it was a situation where he thought it was going to be foul, but rather he had NO idea where it was. I thought I saw him flinch when he realized where the ball was, and then started to run.

they didn't show if he rounded 1st base incorrectly, which i thought i read, but he did look to be coming into second at a weird angle....almost from RF.

I think this shows a problem with the whole "hussle" discussion--if the word means anything it should describe a habit and not a character trait--A-Rod wasn't going hard right away, I believe his explanation, but the habit of ALWAYS running hard would've meant he ended up on second. Who actually had that habit? Pete Rose, maybe--anybody else?

I seem to recall he came straight into 1st, so had to arc out when he headed for 2nd. There were certainly things he did wrong, but delaying a half-second before he began to run was not due to laziness.

Jose Reyes has been taking up most of their time.

The Rod got grief last season for showing up a pitcher on a home run; it turned out that he wasn't sure where the ball went and thought he'd fouled it off. It's the curse of being so strong that your mis-hits turn into extra bases.

The initial pause IS lack of hustle. What's the difference between pausing on a two hopper to the pitcher, fly ball, or a ball don't know where it went.

Only difference is the probability that not movin your slaggard carcass won't have negative consequences with regard to maximizing the # of successful bases attained.

Least be a smart slug-butt, and slug-butt the two-hopper.

A-Rod says critics are off base
He should probably throw over to keep them close, then.

They need to have an isolation cam on all the hitters, all the time and see who really hustles all the time.

Most rookies?

I'd say the difference between the two-hopper to shortstop and the I don't know where it went ball is instinct. Most of the time, you hit it and know the general direction it went, so you can just take off out of the box. But if you don't know where it goes, your instinct is to try to figure it out. I imagine that such an occurence happens infrequently enough that it's tough to overcome that natural instinct. Just a guess.

I am guessing you don't listen to much WFAN.
