Was everyone else as impressed by Jesus Flores as I have been? I thought it was a loss, but catchers tend to develop so slowly, and eliminating AA and AAA I figured would be his downfall. But this guy could've taken a year in the minors and been ready to understudy Castro next year. Very upsetting.
I can only stay a minute -- exams to grade (ugh) -- but I just had to say: that is just idiotic. Presumably, they don't want to send the message to Park that they have about as much desire to let him pitch for the Mets as they do to have a 15th reunion of the '92 club that made us all SO proud. Holding Sosa back would certainly tell Park he's not wanted. But SO WHAT? He's not, at least not until he starts pitching better. I'd say that's a message well worth sending. Instead, we call up Park (if needed), and he almost certainly gets shelled by a good Marlins' line-up and the bullpen gets chewed up as well.
Wonderful.
Longer term, of course, the real concern is whether El Duque is healthy. This is the second reason I was confident that either Maine or Perez (if not both) would be more valuable than El Duque this season. Belief that they were probably actually better than him -- or were reasonable bets to be better, at least -- was the first.
My over/under on El Duque starts this year was 20. I was hoping they'd all be in the first half, and he'd go down as Pedro finished rehab. Guess that's not happening.
The silence from the Mets is concerning. Hopefully it means that Hernandez will start. I don't get that feeling, however.
If he misses only one start, what do you do to get another pitcher on the roster? DL Valentin and go with a 4-man bench?
I think you're overreacting. Sosa is the better option, both because his numbers have been darn impressive and because he's earned it. But Park is a good solid starter, and he's not likely to get shelled. It's a reasonable call, although Sosa deserves the shot in all fairness.
I fail to see how the scenario changes signifigantly if Jorge Sosa gets the start.
