NY Daily News: Duque & [Jose] Valentin share same hospital

Orlando Hernandez, scheduled to face the Marlins tonight at Shea, flew to New York ahead of his teammates yesterday to be examined for shoulder tightness.

Omar Minaya said El Duque had not been scratched, but the GM suggested he would dip into the minors for a replacement if Hernandez couldn’t go. Chan Ho Park, who has a 7.29 ERA at Triple-A New Orleans, appears the lone option. He is on the right rest since he’s scheduled for today’s start with the Zephyrs.

The Mets let Jorge Sosa pitch yesterday for New Orleans with El Duque’s status ambiguous.
...
Hernandez joined Jose Valentin at the Hospital for Special Surgery… Valentin was told he may need another surgery but plans to rehab for now and come back within a month. Valentin admitted one motivation for postponing surgery is his $4.3 million contract for next year, which is guaranteed only if he reaches 400 plate appearances.
...
[Ruben] Gotay, initially in the Zephyrs lineup yesterday, was pulled before the first pitch. Damion Easley, who went 0-for-3 yesterday, figures to get most of the starts at second in Valentin’s absence.

I was very hopeful that the Mets' system-wide paucity of prospects at 2B and C wouldn't hurt them this year. Looks like at least half of that will be tested.

Was everyone else as impressed by Jesus Flores as I have been? I thought it was a loss, but catchers tend to develop so slowly, and eliminating AA and AAA I figured would be his downfall. But this guy could've taken a year in the minors and been ready to understudy Castro next year. Very upsetting.

I can only stay a minute -- exams to grade (ugh) -- but I just had to say: that is just idiotic. Presumably, they don't want to send the message to Park that they have about as much desire to let him pitch for the Mets as they do to have a 15th reunion of the '92 club that made us all SO proud. Holding Sosa back would certainly tell Park he's not wanted. But SO WHAT? He's not, at least not until he starts pitching better. I'd say that's a message well worth sending. Instead, we call up Park (if needed), and he almost certainly gets shelled by a good Marlins' line-up and the bullpen gets chewed up as well.

Wonderful.

Longer term, of course, the real concern is whether El Duque is healthy. This is the second reason I was confident that either Maine or Perez (if not both) would be more valuable than El Duque this season. Belief that they were probably actually better than him -- or were reasonable bets to be better, at least -- was the first.

My over/under on El Duque starts this year was 20. I was hoping they'd all be in the first half, and he'd go down as Pedro finished rehab. Guess that's not happening.

The silence from the Mets is concerning. Hopefully it means that Hernandez will start. I don't get that feeling, however.

If he misses only one start, what do you do to get another pitcher on the roster? DL Valentin and go with a 4-man bench?

One of the papers said Sele might get the start. Not crazy about that idea.

I think you're overreacting. Sosa is the better option, both because his numbers have been darn impressive and because he's earned it. But Park is a good solid starter, and he's not likely to get shelled. It's a reasonable call, although Sosa deserves the shot in all fairness.

I'd rather Sele start than Chan Ho Park of the 7.29 Triple-A ERA. Come on.

I fail to see how the scenario changes signifigantly if Jorge Sosa gets the start.

I don't know how Sele managed it, but he actually looked tolerable last year.

Between Sele and Park, I'll take the stabbing over the immolation.

AP: Hernandez and Valentin go on DL
Pitcher Orlando Hernandez has bursitis in his right shoulder and second baseman Jose Valentin has a partially torn knee ligament.

Both wound up on the 15-day disabled list. Hernandez was replaced for Monday night's game against Florida by Chan Ho Park, who was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans, and the contract of infielder Ruben Gotay was purchased from the Zephyrs.

I can't get too upset about Park, mostly because at this time last year it was Jose Lima instead of Chan Ho Park. In reality, the fact that last year they felt it a good idea to use Lima obviously doesn't make using Park any better now. However, having watched Jose Lima pitch last year, I am alright with any backup option that is not Jose Lima.
