NY Daily News/Price and Raissman:  Fox Picks NASCAR Over Yanks Finish

Heidi-heidi-heidi-ho!

Fox spokesman Dan Bell, who said the network had to show the entire NASCAR race, said Fox apologized for the switch, but added it had warned viewers of the Yanks-Red Sox game several times of the upcoming move.

Bell also said when the game resumed at 8:30 p.m., play-by-play man Joe Buck told viewers the game was also being simulcast on FX, giving them plenty of time to switch over before the plug was pulled. Bell said Buck gave the last warning at 8:53 p.m.

Bell said Fox’s MLB contract only calls for a required 4-7 p.m. Eastern time slot.

“We had two great events we thought we would be able to air in their entirety,” Bell said. “It’s not the way we planned this out. We apologize to viewers.”

Bell said Fox did all it could, even asking NASCAR to push the start of the race back from 8:45 p.m. to 8:53 p.m. - which it agreed to - thinking the game would be over by then.

But the two-hour, 10-minute rain delay meant the game - which, according to Bell, was being shown to 97% of the country - didn’t resume until 8:30 p.m., and couldn’t finish before the start of the race.

“We understand if viewers are upset,” Bell said.

I hate nascar so much. There's just no way anyone can watch that no way.

Who listens to Buck?

Couldn't they broadcast picture-in-picture?

I wonder if they would have cut away had it been extra innings, not a rain delay. Unlike clock-measured sports, baseball games have a high probability of exceeding the typical time of game.

What Bud Selig needs to do is embark on a massive PR campaign to get every city without a domed ballpark to build one. That will chase away those recession blues.

Fundamentally, both NASCAR and baseball involve people running around a circle many times to win...

Actually, I would like NASCAR more if they had to drive around a diamond, like baseball. More hairpin turns = more crashes = more ratings.

So, it's a "freak" occurrence, in that the rain was bad enough to stop the game for 2 hours, but not bad enough to cancel the game altogether. On top of that, FOX didn't completely abandon the game, but showed it on a sister network (with lesser availability). And thirdly, FOX announced ahead of time what they were going to do. What, exactly, is the problem?

It's not like this was a CBS situation where the NFL game bleeds into 60 Minutes with 100% certainty. This was a case of a 5 hour window not being large enough to contain an April game between two over-exposed teams. I know NASCAR doesn't play well in this circle, but a case can be made that one race is of more importance than one baseball game, which would justify FOX's decision. I would guess the ratings would serve as further justification.

It was awesome.

Within a minute they announced on the NASCAR race to turn to FX for the baseball game - but the late inning tension and the "baseball royalty" status of these two teams just getting clicked off was a moment of great "pwnage".

The best part was the FX feed had NO Buck/McCarber audio, just the sound of the crowd as the final few pitches led to the last out.

DAMN STRAIGHT! I had always wondered how a broadcast with no broadcast would actually work, but that was just awesome. You could hear the ebb and flow of the crowd, the way the tension would build before a big pitch ... the sound quality hopped around a bit as the switched between mics, but sometimes the detail was amazing ... after posada fouled off a nasty fastball from paplebon, you could actually hear him exale from the tension

i don't know if it would always have that much intensity and drama, obviously not every game is going to be tense like that, but for late season, rivalry and playoff games, i'd totally watch with no announcers

If only I had been able to figure out where the hell FX was between when the players turned into cars and the end of the game...

FOX shunting Major League Baseball off to a lesser network in favor of Redneck Demolition Derby, for one.

If Nascar is Redneck Demolition Derby, then who is regular demolition derby's target demographic?

I bet Demo Derby could be the next hipster frontier.

They've already resurrected Roller Derby.

Cult of basebaal: in the mid 1970s when I was living in Buffalo I once picked up a canadian UHF station that was broadcasting an Expo game from Jarry Park as you describe. No announcers, just the crowd and the PA announcer. It was quite good once you got used to it. NBC tried it in 1980 with an NFL game Jets vs Dolphins. NOt bad either.
Are Juan Pablo Montoya and Dario Franchitti officially rednecks?

I wonder if it could be possible to have, like the special Spanish button, a "no announcer" button. It sure would make Met telecasts better. No more Gary Cohen/ Keith Hernandez "if you kids at home are watching" tripe.
