N.Y. Daily News: Promoting their small businesses

Guiding You to Victory!!! (okaaay) A quickie look at the fantasy baseball sherpa...Scott Swanay.

Seventeen years as an insurance actuary followed by a stint in market research helped Scott Swanay learn how to analyze dry statistics. By devoting himself to his interest in fantasy baseball, he put those skills to work in a new way.

More than 8 million Americans played fantasy baseball in 2007, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, assembling rosters of players and competing against each other based on their players’ stats. Swanay, 42, used $400,000 in savings to launch a company and Web site that uses his quantitative analysis to provide fantasy baseball advice.

“My role is similar to an investment manager’s role in recommending stocks,” he said. “I’m like a coach or manager on the sidelines, giving player rankings and projections so that people can put together the most efficient team possible.”

So I show my wife this guy's picture. When she finds out he's an actuary who is into sports, she says "Why don't you get your hair done like that?"

He spent $400,000 starting that business? I would think you could do it for less than $400. What do you need other than hosting, some PPC ads, a copy of Excel, and a couple hours a night? I'd be shocked if whatever he sells is any better than what Szym and AROM put out for free with a little Excel model wrapped 'round it.

Agreed. But those two guys don't have the blessing of that fine publication, the N.Y. Daily News.

Hey Kyle - where can I find the Szym/AROM product you referred to? I'm always curious about what else is out there.

Thanks,
Scott (The Sherpa)

Kyle, I think Scott's projections are more tailored to fantasy baseball players than the more general projections that other dorky math guys, such as Nate Silver and I churn out. It's a rather different market - I spend a lot more time working on my BABIP models than trying to guess pitcher wins, while for a fantasy market, the priorities and relative weights of different items are quite different. Obviously, PECOTA and ZIPS (and others) can be applied to fantasy baseball, but they're not really tailored for that area.
