N.Y. Post: DAVID WELLS WOULD LOVE YANKEE RETURN (RR)

This is shocking, shocking I tell you! No, not that David Wells wants to come back to the Yankees...its that Hank Steinbrenner (or anybody) watches “Best Damn Sports Show Period”!

The free-agent left-hander told The Post yesterday he has been working out near his home in San Diego and believes he could bolster a Yankees’ rotation suddenly besieged by question marks.

Could Boomer III be in the cards? Consider that Wells has a huge fan monitoring the situation from Tampa. Hank Steinbrenner admitted yesterday that Wells, who recently made appearances on “Best Damn Sports Show Period,” has crossed his mind as a possibility for the Yankees’ rotation. “I’ve thought about it,” Steinbrenner told The Post. “I saw him on TV, and I did think about it when I was watching.”

...The Baby Boss then dropped a subtle hint he’s growing disillusioned with the Yankees’ youth movement and could open the door to Wells.

“What sticks out in my mind, that team in the late ‘90s, the starting pitching,” he said. “You had [David] Cone, El Duque [Orlando Hernandez], Wells . . . they were all big-game pitchers. They all came from elsewhere - not in the system.

“Everybody talks about the great players from the farm system that we had in the ‘90s, but it was the starting rotation. That was a huge part of the success. Huge.”

and Huge = David Wells.

I'm surprised his patience has lasted this long.

Red Sox fans rejoice everywhere.

That team in the late 20s had some great hitters, though. Maybe they should sign some of them.

I wonder what kind of reaction Suzyn Waldman would have if she spotted David Wells in the Steinbrenner box.
The Post has finally stopped all thos "Will Griffey Jr be traded to the Yankees stories?" they ran for years. At least David Wells return to pinstripes they can still run as often as the Washington Post runs "women, minorities hardest hit" stories.

Yes, this blackball of David Wells has to stop.

#6, I made the same joke to my co-worker on our ride to work this morning.

Hank really is reading line for line from Big George's playbook. So far he's been all bark and no bite ("We're done with ARod.") Yankees fans should hope it remains that way.

Wells, Bonds, Sosa...you could fill an expansion team with these guys. And win 70 games, easily.

If he would be willing to accept a month to month contract, the Yankees should consider it.

There was no luxury tax or revenue sharing back then so it was easier to acquire other team's pitchers because there were more on the market. That's why growing your own has taken on additional importance.

"The Slide! The Slide!"

The simplest words must intimate, but not portray, the unutterable horror of the catastrophe. The victims rushed from their cottage, and sought refuge in what they deemed a safer spot--where, in contemplation of such an emergency, a sort of barrier had been reared. Alas! they had quitted their security, and fled right into the pathway of destruction. Down came the whole side of the mountain, in a cataract of ruin. Just before it reached the house, the stream broke into two branches--shivered not a window there, but overwhelmed the whole vicinity, blocked up the road, and annihilated everything in its dreadful course. Long ere the thunder of the great Slide had ceased to roar among the mountains, the mortal agony had been endured, and the victims were at peace. Their bodies were never found.

The next morning, the light smoke was seen stealing from the cottage chimney up the mountain side. Within, the fire was yet smouldering on the hearth, and the chairs in a circle round it, as if the inhabitants had but gone forth to view the devastation of the Slide, and would shortly return, to thank Heaven for their miraculous escape. All had left separate tokens, by which those who had known the family were made to shed a tear for each. Who has not heard their name? The story has been told far and wide, and will forever be a legend of these mountains. Poets have sung their fate.

I've got a great idea. How about baby Stein call up Omar and offer him Hughes for El Duque, straight up? Then they can re-sign Wells and go off and find David Cone, wherever he is these days. Plus, there's a hole at 1B - where's Tino at? And can't Girardi don the tools ignorance while Posada's out? And Brosius is really a better third baseman than A-Rod, whatever those computers say - the guy won three rings, and A-Rod can't even stay conscious during his daughter's birth, for crying out loud. We can't count on him in Game Seven. Plus, I'm pretty sure Bernie hasn't officially retired.

See? All you gotta do to win a championship is bring back all the old players who used to win championships ten years ago. It'll be like the anniversary tour.

(yes, I'm a Mets fan)
