N.Y. Post: HANK STEINBRENNER: PAPELBON A ‘MOUSE’ (RR)

As the deadly bantavirus spreads!

Hammerin’ Hank fired back yesterday.

“Being insulted by Papelbon is like being attacked by a mouse,” Steinbrenner told The Post.

“John Henry and I traded a couple of jabs good-naturedly,” he added. “So now, all of a sudden, this player, this 20-something kid who really doesn’t know his way in the world, comes out with a personal insult. There’s no excuse for that.”

When was the last time you saw Derek Jeter criticize an owner? Steinbrenner did add that Papelbon “is one great pitcher.” And he’d love to have him on his team.

“It was nothing personal against John [Henry], nothing personal against Larry [Lucchino], nothing personal against [Terry] Francona, nothing personal against the team or the fans,” Steinbrenner said. “It was just a general comment that is the truth. I respect the Red Sox and their fans, but the Yankees are the most popular team in American sports. Ask Jerry Jones in Dallas, he’ll tell you that. That’s why they want to do business with us. So it’s just a fact.”

"I really have nothing more to say about the Red Sox the entire season," he said. "We've covered that ground and, basically, I'm tired of talking about them."

"...I'm a shipbuilder, and I'm going to leave running the team to the baseball people."

Ask Jerry Jones in Dallas, he’ll tell you that.

Jerry Jones can't be trusted.

The Rays are the real rivls, the Sox are so 2004.

I think Hank is confusing Papelbon with Pedroia.

The Rays are the real rivls...

Of the Sox? They have had more brawls with them in recent years than the Yankees.

2003.

They've had 3 incidents with them post-Henry, IIRC:

- Kazmir hitting two batters in a row and getting thrown out. Not a real big deal, but the benches might have cleared.
- The Arroyo game where one of their whack pitchers threw at Ortiz's head after Arroyo hit someone (Huff?) and Jay Payton hit a grandslam later in the game (that bears no relation to the brawl, but it's such an amazing event it must be noted).
- The Tavarez thing.

You have to admit it will be hilarifying if the Rays beat out the Sox this year.
   16. Fumbduck Joe Bivens  Posted: March 15, 2008 at 12:42 PM (#2713329)
Yeah, but it will be pretty hard for the Red Sox to win only 74 games.

When I think of how hard Hank Steinbrenner has worked to get where he is today, when I think of all the obstacles he's had to overcome, and to have some punk kid insult him, well that gets me a little angry.

#14-That link doesn't show Jeter going after an owner. It shows Jeter refusing to go after an owner even though he had an excuse to.

"He's the boss and he's entitled to his opinion, right or wrong"
   20. hscs  Posted: March 15, 2008 at 03:12 PM (#2713373)
And then Jeter said George Steinbrenner wasn't being "fair." It wasn't excessively critical, but fits all the same.
   21. Rich  Posted: March 15, 2008 at 03:46 PM (#2713384)
Not in recent years. The real brawls occurred before the Henry era. The Rays hated Pedro and Daubach.

I view 2006 as being very recent.

One punch = a brawl in your world?
   23. Rich  Posted: March 15, 2008 at 04:44 PM (#2713413)
One punch = a brawl in your world?

Is your world definition free?

1 : to quarrel or fight noisily

From the linked article:

According to Tavárez, who calmly discussed the incident with reporters (he admitted throwing the punch and stepping on Gathright's forearm), Gathright and Crawford were interested in meting out their own brand of justice. At least that was the message he received while players from both clubs, after separating the two principals, were milling about their dugouts.

''Yeah, they were yelling at me, 'Let's get one and one in the parking lot,' " Tavárez said. ''I'm not going to fight, man. What happened is happened, it's over, and I'm not going to fight nobody.

Notice that there were punches and there was yelling, i.e., to quarrel or fight noisily.

You were saying?

You are consumed by projection, but I guess that's unsurprising from a person like yourself who lacks self-awareness.

Oh for crying out loud, you're really stretching the point. What Jeter said wasn't fair was comparing him to Dennis Rodman, which he didn't say Steinbrenner did. In any case, the best you get out of this whole scenario is Jeter resisting an owner's criticism of Jeter himself, not a player criticizing an owner. This is nothing at all like the Papelbon situation, which is why (the younger) Steinbrenner brought it up in the fist place.

I am projecting that no further good will come of this thread.
   30. hscs  Posted: March 15, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2713505)
I'm not trying to stretch it, just disagreeing with the out-of-nowhere Jeter line. It's not like Hank v. Papelbon, but isn't it just a teeny bit revisionist to ignore Jeter finding fault in George Steinbrenner (perhaps indirectly)?
   31. Harry Balsagne Teaches The Correct Way to Hit!!  Posted: March 15, 2008 at 10:03 PM (#2713533)
Yeah, the Yankees are America's team. All those other teams in the MLB pretty much only exist to develop good players that the Yankees can eventually sign on the FA market. Nobody really likes the Indians or the Angels or the Diamondbacks or the Rockies. It's basically two leagues of Washington Generals; show teams existing for the sole purpose of being utterly dominated by the Yankees.
   32. Dan The Mediocre  Posted: March 15, 2008 at 10:06 PM (#2713534)
Yeah, the Yankees are America's team.

Let's see...overly inflated sense of purpose...belief they are inherently better no matter what...always sure everyone wants to be them...maybe they really are America's Team.

Yammerin Yank is great, but the above is my post of the thread.
