N.Y. Post: Kernan: METS: VICTORY HIDES BIGGER PROBLEMS (RR)

The Mets always seem ready to be beaten, not a team that is ready to win.

The moment of defeat may come swiftly as it did on Yadier Molina’s home run in the 2006 NLCS or it may take the agonizing path of last year’s Great Collapse, but somehow, the way the Mets approach the game leaves them vulnerable for that fatal blow.

Until they correct that flaw, they are doomed for ultimate failure.

“We had the opportunity to tack on earlier in the game and a lot of that is my fault,” said Wright, who is never afraid to take the heat. “We didn’t do that, but this is definitely one of those games that is good for later in the season because when the race starts tightening up, you can look back and say, ‘Hey we win these close games, we’re used to winning these close games.’ It gives you more confidence.”

That is a most valuable lesson because this is a team that has not learned to rise to the occasion. The Mets had their new ace on the mound, Johan Santana, but the Pirates battled him and he could not make it through the sixth inning. Santana is a winner, but he has a challenge ahead of him, teaching the Mets how to win.

Uh-oh...severe laughter-induced rectus abdominus muscelspasms coming on!

The team is 14-11 and .5 game out of first (which spot is occupied by a team that will never be there by the all-star break). Get a grip.

Maybe Santana can induce the baseballs the Mets' batters hit to fall in at clutch moments of the game as well.

Holy killjoy, Batman.

The inability of a subset of Mets fans to enjoy the season thus far is too bad, but is far overwhelmed by the level of media insistence that they don't.

Or at all. This offense has been putrid so far.

They're 7th in the NL in EQA, right there in runs per game. Thats not great, but putrid?

The New York sporting press (traditional division) needs to do a better job of covering up their pinstriped pajamas.

Is every sportswriter covering the Mets Jay Mariotti?

It looks like the press and certain fans need someone to take the fall. Nothing they do can get seem to end this hate.

Willie might have to be the guy.

It's true, they're not going anywhere until they learn how to win. Like a couple of years ago, they were a good team, but they lost in the NLCS. They didn't know how to seal the deal. If they ever win the World Series, it will be clear that they now know how to win, and Kernan can point out in his column that THIS Mets team is different from its talented predecessors, because the players finally know how to win. You can't argue with that.

Willie might have to be the guy.

He might have to be the guy because, in a lot of ways, he is the problem. He is setting the sourpuss tone wherein no win, no level of solid performance, brings any happiness or satisfaction. When John Maine pitched well last year, it was met with, "He still has a lot to prove." No positive vibe at all. When Jose Reyes plays the game with infectious joy, Willie Randolph was immune to it, and proved to be the ultimate killjoy. One of the things "they" say that is actually true, I think, is that the manager sets the tone, and the tone Randolph sets is no fun, ever. How can you enjoy even winning when the manager makes it illegal to enjoy anything in any sort of visible way???

For Randolph, everything hides the next problem; nothing is good enough; nothing is proven or established. There is something to be said for this approach, in its place -- he wants the team not to be satisfied until it has accomplished its goals. But he takes it to such an extreme that it ends up with this tense atmosphere he doesn't even realize he's created.

Welcome to the world you've created, Willie. Nicely done.

Anyone know who the Mets starters are going to be this weekend at AZ?

It should be Pelfrey, Maine, Santana, in that order.

Thanks, JJ. Should be great matchups; Webb vs. Maine on Sat, Haren vs. Santana on Sun.

Hey, that Ollie sure can fill out a box score. He's like the Dwight Howard of MLB.

Ollie's last 4 starts:

17.1 IP
20 H
18 R
17 BB
16 K

The rotation, the supposed strength of the team, has been disappointing. Santana has been good, not great, although he is a slow starter. Maine and Perez are really struggling with their control, especially Ollie, and Pelfrey and Figueroa are what they are. This team needs Pedro back soon and for Ollie and Maine to pitch more like they did last year.

Indeed. Between Maine and Perez, 11 starts - 56 Innings (not to mention 38 BB). 146 total IP by starters in 26 games. Averaging less than 6 IP per start is simply not going to get it done. Exposing that long relief in the 6th and 7th innings is bad news.

I really hope the Mets remain dazed and confused through Monday.

The NY Times is on Jose's case today: Reyes’s Mishap Leads a Day of Lowlights for the Mets

There was a man standing in shallow left field when a ball that had zipped down the third-base line toward the corner was retrieved and tossed back into the infield. This man was slim, and he was wearing a No. 7 jersey. That is the corporeal evidence that José Reyes was playing shortstop for the Mets against Pittsburgh during the second inning of their game Wednesday.

It is harder to quantify where Reyes’s mind had drifted off to when he neglected to cover second base as part of the ensuing botched rundown, the nadir of the Mets’ embarrassing 13-1 loss at Shea Stadium. The Pirates went on to score two more runs in a seven-run inning, though it was all cosmetic.
