N.Y. Post: Sherman: EXCLUSIVE: JOBA STARTS YEAR IN ‘PEN (RR)

The Post and the Yankees crack me up.

Joba Chamberlain will prepare during spring training as a starter, but will begin the season in the Yankee bullpen barring injury to any of the other five main rotation members, team officials confirmed to The Post.

It had been speculated throughout the offseason that Chamberlain could open in the ‘pen as a way to restrain his innings from going beyond the approximately 140 the organization wants to limit him to in 2008. The YanksNew York Yankees believe that at Chamberlain’s age (22), he should not be asked to exceed his innings total of last year (112.1) by much more than 30 innings, or else he would be put at a greater likelihood for an arm injury.

But these new Joba Rules are not only about protecting Chamberlain’s precious arm. The Yanks also want to use April and May as an audition for his successor. The idea would be to have a slate of young relievers work in the less pressurized sixth and seventh innings. The organizational hope is that someone from a group that could include Alan Horne, Jose VerasJose Veras , Edwar Ramirez and Ross Ohlendorf emerges in reliability and can graduate to the eighth-inning role when Chamberlain is transitioned back to the rotation.

I am ok with this plan, as long as he uses more than the fastball/slider.

And as long as they do put him in the rotation, instead of deciding in June that he's just too "valuable" where he is.

Why not begin Joba as the 5th starter and pair him with another rookie pitcher like Ohlendrof or Horne, who could then break-in as long men a la Earl Weaver?

Exactly. If start in the second half, I put up an ERA around 4, that will be more valuable than any trade they can make to solidify the rotation.

Who's going to be the Yankees fifth starter if Joba is in the pen? I'm counting Wang, Moose, Phil Helmuth, Jello Biafra, and ???

OK, got it, Roger's loverboy

Thats not terrible.

SJ, that's actually a solid rotation. Having Joba as the 6th starter is excellent.

well, if they stay healthy its solid. I believe Moose will be better than his August last year, he was throwing much harder his last couple starts, but I wonder of the durability of both he and Pettitte.

I like how something can now be EXCLUSIVE merely because it is apparently confirmation of something that has already been widely discussed.

I imagine we'll be seeing an article like this about Buchholz soon as well, with Tavarez taking his spot in the rotation until July or so.

I would prefer that Joba doesn't fill the 8th inning role for any period of time because there will be pressure from irrational fans and writers to keep him there.

"Exclusive" means "Look ma, I did something more than rewrite an AP story!".

Don't worry, once P Hughes breaks down in start #2, Joba will be in the rotation. Hughes is the next B. Sheets.

I agree. Ideally, shouldn't he be a long man? Pitch him for 2-4 innings every 3-4 days to keep him somewhat stretched out?

This only makes sense. Mussina is incredibly poorly suited to come out of the pen (yes, I know, he had that one great postseason relief appearance, but, c'mon.) And it'd be a real burden on the bullpen to carry three SP who all go 5 IP/game because of pitch counts; two will be bad enough as it is. I understand the concern that Joba will get PAPELBON'D!, but, whaddayagonnado. They just have to, y'know, not do that.
