NY Sun: The Future of the Sun

I clicked online to find
No Marchman/Goldman there
To ease the pressure of
My ever worried mind.

This morning I write to you about the future of The New York Sun, which is in circumstances that may require us to cease publication at the end of September unless we succeed in our efforts to find additional financial backing. The managing editor, Ira Stoll, who is one of the founding partners in the paper, and I have shared this news with our colleagues, and we would like our readers as well to be aware of the situation.

Hope the funding is found.

Hopefully Tim finds a new place for his fine writing.

This paper is an embarassment. I actually have a subscription to the rag, and actually get a paper once every 2 weeks. When I call and complain I get the paper delivered reasonably often for about a week, then back to once a week. Of course I could be getting just a bad delivery person, but checking with other people this is a common occurance. I never don't get my WSJ or FT.

I would unsubscribe, but I paid in advance and it is extremly cheap.

The only feature in the sun worth looking at is the articles on the art world.

Good riddance rag.

I also hope our beloved sports columnists land on their feet, and I hope the best for John Avlon (big fan).

That having been said, if the executives from the Sun came to me for funding, I would probably regard it as a really poor investment. A physical newspaper has a ton of overhead, and the profit potential has been spiraling the wrong way for most of the last ten years.

Two questions: Why did you subscribe? And how is it possible you don't get it? My never pay for the Sun get it all the time, as do other neighbors in our building. I assume they do these freebies to drive up circulation numbers, but I find it astonishing they can consistantly deliver the paper to people who don't pay for it, but struggle to get it to people who do.

It is delivered to people who don't want it, and not delivered to people who do. It has erudite, advanced and politically conscious writers about sports and movies, and dogmatic yawnfests about national affairs and politics. Instead of being founded a hundred years ago as a strident political rag and gradually becoming respectable before eventually going bankrupt in the 21st century, it was a staid newspaper 50 years ago, then disappeared and was founded again 10 years ago as a strident political rag, and is going bankrupt almost immediately after that.

It appears to be a sort of Bizarro newspaper. Its name should be changed to the Old York Moon.

What's its motto, "All News That Not Fit to Print"?

Old lady #1: Boy, the food here is terrible.
Old lady #2: Yeah. And such small portions.

Since the beginning of time, man has yearned to destroy the Sun.

He hasn't "gotten it" in some time.

I second Barry's motion.. Hope Tim finds a good home for his great writing. Sucks hearing this news.
