N.Y. Times: Architect of Phillies, Gillick Will Listen to Anyone’s Plans (RR)

“Listen to Anyone’s Plans*” (*cackles like a mad scientist)

When Gillick came to Philadelphia, he found a team on a treadmill. For five seasons, the Phillies had won 80 to 88 games and had not reached the playoffs. After another near miss in 2006, they have made consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since 1980 and ’81.

Gillick has made mistakes, like signing starter Adam Eaton and trading Gavin Floyd to the Chicago White Sox for Freddy García. But other big moves have worked, like dealing for Brad Lidge and shipping out Bobby Abreu, which saved more than $20 million and cleared a spot for Shane Victorino.

Most notable is Gillick’s knack for finding complementary players. From Jayson Werth to Chad Durbin to Scott Eyre to Greg Dobbs, Gillick is skilled at finding bargain contributors.

“There’s some guys we’ve really zeroed in on, not the sexy, big-name guys that everybody knows about,” Amaro said. “But for the piece that’s going to help our club be better, he is fantastic. It’s really helped getting a guy like Matt Stairs or J. C. Romero — the pieces that give your team some marginal advantage.”

Amaro, who will probably be the Phillies’ next general manager, called Gillick a Hall of Fame executive.

This is news.

This is news.

not really. putting aside my hatred for the meathead, just as a practical matter, it'd be idiocy to hand the job to someone without opening up the process and taking a look at some other qualified candidates.

but really, amaro would have been the GM 3 years ago if there wouldn't have been a huge PR backlash. with the rank and file sated by two consecutive postseason appearances, the road is clear for amaro to ascend.

not really.

Not sure I understand your response, other than that you don't like Amaro.

That level of certainty is much more than has been reported anywhere in the Philadelphia press. Just in the past few weeks there have been articles on Gillick staying or bringing in someone from outside, not to mention Arbuckle. Even if you assumed Amaro would get it, as a public matter, this is the strongest statement I've seen from a reporter.

They've been grooming Amaro for years. Philly media doesn't say much because everybody just assumes he's the guy.

Yeah, the probability of Amaro being the next GM is probably around 99% and has been that way since right after Gillick came aboard.

If the Phillies manage to win the World Series this year, does Gillick wind up going into the Hall of Fame? It's notoriously hard for a front office man to make it and there are certainly other GMs who I think are/were better than Gillick, but on paper his resume would be formidable. Built the Blue Jays back to back world champion, went to Seattle and built a team who set the single season record for regular season wins, then went to Philadelphia and built (in this hypothetical situation) another world series winning team. Now, this ignores the credit that other people deserve for those teams and may paint a rosier picture of Gillick than he has earned, but by the time he would be considered for the HOF this could be how he's presented. Anyone else think he could have a shot?
