N.Y. Times: Gary Carter Has Eye on Randolph’s Job (RR)

Gary Carter...looking for more camera time than Bob Stephenson! (as if that’s even possible)

Willie Randolph got a vote of confidence Friday from General Manager Omar Minaya, but that did not stop the sharks from circling.

On “The Mike & Murray Show” on Sirius Satellite Radio, the former Met Gary Carter campaigned to replace Randolph. Carter, a Hall of Famer, is the manager of the Orange County Flyers of the independent Golden Baseball League.

According to a transcript of the program, Carter said that when he heard of Randolph’s troubles, he “immediately” called Jay Horwitz, the Mets’ vice president for media relations, and asked if he should call the team’s principal owner, Fred Wilpon. “I just want them to know of my availability.” Carter said. “I’m only a phone call away. I could be in New York tomorrow.”

Sure, Gary Carter would listen if the Mets called. In fact, Whitey would probably listen too.

And if someone guns down Obama, Hillary is ready. It's great to live in an America with choices!

Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead!

Carter: Here's one -- nine pence.

Randolph: I'm not dead!

Carter: Well, he will be soon, he's very ill.

Randolph: I'm getting better!

Carter: No, you're not -- you'll be stone dead in a moment.

Heh, 6-4-3. They're getting in line to club Randolph.

I have to admit, I came to this thread looking to make the "would listen if xxx called" joke.

This strikes me as more than a bit unseemly. Campgaining for a job that is not yet available? Publicly?

Meh.

Can I get some fanboy love for Ollie P., please? 1.547 WHIP. Averaging 5 1/3 IP per start and 18.25 pitches per inning. 43% of pitches for balls. 37/43 BB/K in 53 IP. Last 9 starts, 47.2 IP, 32 R, 36 BB, 35 K.

Dude can fill out a boxscore. He's like the Chris Paul of MLB.

"Slimy" seems more appropriate. "Clueless" and "desperate" are in the running too.

Yeah, Carter can call the Mets, but to go on the radio and talk about it? And then put down Randolph? It's like Carter is intent on proving that he's not qualified for the job. And of course, he's not. Has he managed at any level?

Rookie ball, I think.

Carter has had great success is his short time as a manager:
2005 Gulf Coast Mets rookie: 37-16 .698
2006 St. Lucie Mets A+: 77-62 .554, league champions
2007 Orange County Flyers Independent: 1-0

That 1-0 tops Willie Randolph's career managerial record before he got the Mets job.

Harv, you only say that because you're so tolerant of incompetence.

I don't have any problem with Carter calling the Mets, since they would probably be ready to fill the job for the rest of the season before Randolph's dismissal became public. But talking about it on the radio tends to show that Carter would have trouble with the pr aspects of the job.

But talking about it on the radio tends to show that Carter would have trouble with the pr aspects of the job.
He compounded matters by calling (unsolicited) into WFAN today and digging himself deeper. I was flabbergasted that he didn't take the only out he had, which is to say "I'm a fan, I was talking about the problems I see with the team, I hope it turns around." Well, he would say that... and then keep going and repeat, amazingly, that he wanted the Mets to know that he was "available." He had this dumb story about how he had to remind them of that because Tim Kurkijan or "someone else" had said somewhere (I forget if this offending remark was made on TV or on radio) that he was no longer managing. So apparently since some random person didn't know he was managing in the indies, that meant that no one in the New York Mets organization knew it. Honestly, the whole thing (beginning with calling up FAN to begin with...) was ridiculous and I felt like he completely humiliated himself.

(He did say that he had made a mistake by turning down the offer to manage Binghamton. He said that he hadn't wanted a guarantee of the major league job, he just wanted assurance that he would be considered. That didn't pass my smell test -- is any minor league manager ever specifically told, "you have zero chance to be promoted?" He said that he would take that job if it were offered now. I guess that shows humility, but now that he's already out, I'm not sure it helps him get back in -- "I'll take either your AA job or your major league job" isn't a very coherent pitch.)
   21. depletion Posted: May 24, 2008 at 08:46 PM (#2793534)
Carter has been a good manager and obviously knows the game and "New York", but he just delayed his arrival as a big-league manager by several years with this thoughtless comment. He talked himself out of a Mets system job last year by not accepting an assignment.

This is true. Dial didn't find what Carter did to be disrespectful, but "tolerant of incompetence" seems to have been aimed squarely at Lassus for peppering his criticism with such statements as "I could see" or "I wouldn't mind".
   24. Lassus Posted: May 24, 2008 at 10:18 PM (#2793649)
That's just because Dial has never heard me talk about Gerard Schwarz, Harold Rosenbaum, James DePriest, or Bruce Browne. I only have so much intolerance to go around.

   26. Lassus Posted: May 25, 2008 at 09:19 PM (#2794321)
I think it's going to rest (at least the FIRST time, perhaps of many) on this Florida series. A sweep or a series win saves his job. In the other direction, he's probably out. Although I have to say, I'm not really sure who would really be any better at this point.

Maybe Carlos? (ChadBradfordWannabe)
   27. Boots Day Posted: May 25, 2008 at 10:06 PM (#2794350)
If Willie doesn't get fired after today's game, when the Mets lost to Colorado Springs, he's not ever going to get fired.
   28. Lassus Posted: May 25, 2008 at 10:47 PM (#2794363)
I disagree, Boots, it's the divisional losses that will point to a firing more than against that mysterious land of the midwest.
   29. The Mets make Russlan sad Posted: May 25, 2008 at 10:52 PM (#2794365)
If the Mets don't make the playoffs, I think Minaya has to go as well even though I have generally been pleased with the teams that he has built. I'd feel bad about it but it is what it is. Not making the playoffs in 2005 wasn't really his fault as only so much improvement could have been expected in one offseason but one playoff appearance in three years since 2008 isn't good enough considering the Mets payroll.

BTW, it looks like Jose Valentin is going to be coming back soon. Obviously, this might be a coincidence but Jose Reyes has played his best baseball with him around. I wonder if he does have a good effect on him.
