N.Y. Times: Torre Won’t Close Door on Bernie Williams as a Dodger (RR)

What’s next?...The Dodgers asking the putrescinal cadaver of Pete Sheehy to fold clothes?

A Bernie Williams-Joe Torre reunion in Los Angeles could become a reality next season.

Neither Williams nor Torre would dismiss speculation last night that Williams could return to the major leagues in 2008, perhaps as a member of the Dodgers.

“We haven’t talked about it, but I certainly wouldn’t close the door as far as listening to him and taking a look and seeing,” Torre said before the annual gala for his Safe at Home Foundation, a charity devoted to curbing domestic violence. “He’d have to relocate, and I’m not sure if he’s into that.”

“The question is still on my mind,” Williams said before last night’s charity event. “I’m still trying to stay in shape and do all the things I need to do to make sure I’m still in good physical condition. It’s still up in the air.”

Would he be worse than Pierre?

Would he be worse than Pierre?

Sadly? Yes. Bernie's last two years he had an 85 and a 95 OPS+, with really bad (painful) defense . . . . There's just no there there.

At least Pierre steal some bases when he gets on base (at virtually the same rate Bernie did his last two years), which Williams doesn't do any more. And while Williams hits with a LOT more power than Pierre does (doesn't everyone this side of Luis Castillo?), you have to figure even that would be diminished by a year off and being yet another year older.

Wow . . . he'd be worse than Juan Pierre. How about that for a reality check for those dreaming of a Bernie comeback? Leave it alone, Joe.

That is sad. Speaking as someone who remembers Bernie in his glory days, I sure hope he stays retired.

I'd make a joke about closing the door on Bernie's hand to keep him off the roster, but he's a guitar player, and that would be mean.

Guitar players don't need feet, though.

I hear Earl Weaver gave Jim Palmer and Eddie Murray a call the other day. they'll be pitching ideas at Angelos on Monday.

Where's the smart ass now who told me to get off drugs for suggesting Bernie and Gonzalez playing significant time in the Dodger outfield in a thread about a week ago?

All kidding aside, stuff like this is what makes me think that it was the right time for the Yankees to sever ties with Torre.

This guarantees the Dodgers will be celebrating their sixth world championship in 2008. And nothing else.

Angelos should probably listen.

The Dodgers are sorely lacking in Luis Sojo.

You do realize that wherefore means "why" and not "where," right?

Proof that Joe Torre is senile.

What is it with the freakin' Dodgers that they have to take the rejects of the AL East as managers? Are they actually retired and only working for a half salary with no benefits?

Soon, the Dodgers will make the Giants look like a bunch of spring chickens.

Think I'll pull out that old VCR and put in those '88 Series tapes instead of watching a train wreck next season.

He: "How do you beat the Dodgers?"
She: "Hit the ball at least 150 feet!"
Hyukyukyukyukyukyuk!
