Olbermann: Well, You Can Call Me Ray, Or You Can Call Me Jay… UPDATED

Update, 12:15 AM EDT 7/2: I forgot! The aforementioned Mr. Wally Jose Bryan was also a little off on his age, which invokes the greatest baseball biography ever written, on the back of the 1964 Phillies’ Rookie Card featuring Dave Bennett (the top one here). If the wonderful image of a man getting younger before your very eyes doesn’t register, read the write-up outloud.

Heh!

And check out the Rick Wise line as a 17 year old. Would we be calling him King Rick?

Wait, I thought now was the era where we rushed players to the bigs.

EDIT: Wow, how bad were the Phils in the 60s? Dennis Bennett was the ace at 9-5 in 1963?

I think they're just using "ace" as a generic term for a good pitcher. Ray Culp or Chris Short was probably the Phils' ace in 1963. Bennett had the lowest era but only in 119 innings. Dave Bennett pitched exactly 1 inning in his major league career in 1964. They really did bring 'em up young then, no?

Wise had a perfectly cromulent major league career. Man could hit, too.

What does Olbermann consider to be the best baseball bio ever?

Yeah. Too bad he's become a footnote to Steve Carlton's career.

Yes, plus it's a baseball card, which means that everything it talks about is great. It isn't going to say "Brother of Phillies' mediocre nonentity Dennis Bennett" :)

We can probably rule out his.

Well, You Can Call Me Ray, Or You Can Call Me Jay…
Just in case anyone forgot.

Homer: Hey, Ray Jay Johnson never changed his act, and he's more popular now than he's ever been.
Lisa: Who?
Homer: "Oh, you can call him Ray, or you can call him Jay, or you can call him Ray Jay, but you doesn't have to call him" --
Lisa: I'm sick of him already.

Nancy's ratings are getting smaller before his eyes.

More than cromulent. 188 wins, coupla All Star seasons.

Yeah. Too bad he's become a footnote to Steve Carlton's career.

He was also traded for Dennis Eckersley, and, if you don't mind diluting the standard just a little, Reggie Smith.

And played just about the single most awesomest game ever played, when he pitched a no-hitter AND hit two homers.

Has anyone calculated Wise's WPA for that game?
