Olney: Mauer’s agent seen near Twins’ camp

An arrest is imminent!

There are strong indications that the Minnesota Twins and All-Star Joe Mauer are gathering momentum in their negotiations for a long-term contract that would keep the catcher anchored to his hometown team for the foreseeable future.

Mauer’s agent, Ron Shapiro, was seen at the Fort Myers, Fla., airport early Sunday afternoon, near the Twins’ spring training facility, amid signs there has been progress in the talks.

The working parameters of the deal were not known, but the expectation within the industry was that Mauer was in line for a contract of eight to 10 years, worth $20 million-$25 million annually.

...The Twins’ signing of Mauer to a long-term deal would be widely hailed within the industry, at a time when there are growing concerns about the disparity between teams like the Yankees and Red Sox, and teams that generate less revenue, like the Rays, Athletics and Twins.

Assuming a Mauer deal is completed, a major challenge for the Twins—who have evolved from a small-market team into a club with a midrange budget—is how they can compete while paying one player such a high percentage of their payroll.

UPDATE~~ Joe Mauer and Twins agree to 8 year, $184 million contract extension!!!!

This is good news for baseball.

That said, we've been hearing a lot about the astronomical contract Pujols is going to command after the 2011 season. I think this puts into perspective how off-the-map ARod's extension was and I'd expect you won't see another $200 million deal for a long, long time.
   26. Francoeur Sans Gages (AlouGoodbye) Posted: March 21, 2010 at 10:51 PM (#3483353)
Mauer is something of an injury risk, and he wasn't a free agent, whereas Rodriguez was.

If Pujols is after the money, he'll get over $200m, easily. But he might be more concerned to stay in St. Louis - his last contract, he gave them a big discount.
   27. Ivan Grushenko of Hong Kong Posted: March 21, 2010 at 10:55 PM (#3483355)

   28. ...even Chuck Norris was afraid of Jim Rice Posted: March 21, 2010 at 11:00 PM (#3483356)
Pujols is the best hitter on the planet, but he'll be five years older than Mauer, relative to his contract and then there's this from Pujols' '02 PECOTA Card:
He's older than advertised, by at least three years according to some estimates. It was apparently a not-so-open secret in his college program, but the party line is that he “graduated early” from high school in the Dominican Republic.

Don't mean to thread hijack, but with Teixeira locked in for the Yankees, I think Pujols and his agent will read the tea leaves, see there isn't nearly as much money out there as has been widely speculated, and take a lesser deal than the one Mauer just signed to stay in St. Louis.

I'm delighted Mauer's staying with the Twins, and the contract is as short and with as low an AAV as I could have guessed, but am I the only one who thinks Mauer may have just had his career year, and that there's at least an even chance he'll settle into the 130-145 OPS+ range for the next several years? Last year was fueled by a .373 BABIP I don't expect he'll sustain.

The discount isn't as big as it looks, since Pujols signed a long-term contract during the mini-collusion period of 2003-2004. In retrospect it wasn't a great time to sign a contract, but he got what we was requesting in arbitration (his first year), which would've been a record.

I wonder what the Twins' inflation assumption looks like. I guess to sign somebody like Mauer, you have to go with the standard 10%, but that doesn't seem sustainable.

I'm not sure I buy Mauer as a big injury risk. He's not as safe as Pujols or Teixeira, certainly, but why is he such a risk? He's a catcher? He's a tall catcher? He had a bad knee injury once?

Worrying about his rookie year injury I kind of understand, but that was six years ago. And any inherent risk in being a catcher is offset by the value he provides in being, you know, a catcher who wins batting titles.

Because he missed a month last season with a joint problem? Because he missed 50+ games two years before that? Because his career high in games is 146? Because catchers get hurt a lot? Because guys who have already been hurt are more likely to get hurt again? I'm not sure it takes any particular creativity -- hell, it only takes half a brain -- to see why Mauer is an injury risk going forward.

I'm a Yankee fan and I'm pleased. Its a good thing for the game when franchise players stay with their team. All the more so for Mauer, who's a local guy.
Also, I'm pretty confident one of the 27 catching prospects in the Yankee system will stick at the position. Seems to me it was most likely that Mauer woulda otherwise ended up in Boston, and, of course, #### Boston.

If he can stick at the position, how long is Mauer going to be a catcher instead of a 3B/1B/DH? 2 or 3 or 4 years? I wouldn't expect more than 4, and I could see as few as 2 if Ramos continues to improve.

Couldn't be happier for the Twins and their fans, particularly now that they've crawled out from under their dome. The franchise is assuming a great deal of risk, but you have to go out on a ledge to retain an historically unique player. I'd hate to be the GM who allows a 3-time batting champ & 26-year-old catcher to walk because I was nervous potential injuries.

And the 2002 Prospectus comment on Pujols marked a low point in their Cardinal coverage. There's careless and then there's libelous.

I'm sure having a prospect that is good enough to move Joe Mauer out from behind the plate is the least of the Twins' concerns. I'm equally sure that Wilson Ramos is not that prospect yet.

Very cool, R-LP. Did they announce it over the PA?

Unfortunately the Open House ended at 5:00, shortly before the news broke. The Twins were replaying the last 7 innings of Game 163 on the scoreboard throughout the day, which elicited numerous standing ovations from the crowd on hand--I'm sure a Mauer announcement at the park would have been crazy.

Bitter? My good man, you're welcome to crow about your deep pockets and free-spending ways but your sudden pride in big-ticket contracts doesn't amount to a speck of tarnish on a 2009 World Series Championship ring. Be aware that the reanimated corpse of Carl Pohlad has been sighted shambling towards the Twins offices, throatily decrying the wasteful allocation of his welfare money for a mere ballplayer.

If that catcher consistently plays about that much, sure. But Mauer doesn't. In fact, he has to DH a lot in order to get to the point where he's taking his PA nearly full-time. The salient point is that he's been hurt before and plays a position where guys have to miss time every year to keep from getting hurt.

I'm not saying that Mauer isn't a great ballplayer, because he patently is. But the idea that he's not an injury risk is wrong-headed.

Why would any Yankees fan be bitter? It's about damn time that mid-market teams were spending to keep their stars.

My attitude, at least, is that if a star player hits the market (free agent or trade) then the Yankees have as much right to sign him as anyone. Letting Mauer go to Boston because signing him to NY might hurt the feelings of a Twins fan is dumb.

Three or four years from now, once the Twins' new-stadium shine has worn off, Mauer has had an ouchy or two, and Posada is finally laid to rest, this contract will be salary-dumped for whatever Alfonso Soriano non-star prospect happens to be hanging around the Yankees.

Yes, but he has a full no-trade, so the 10-5 is a moot point.
