Just another in a long line of signs lending support to the theory of evolution.

Mauer. I mean, Tex is great and all, but answer is pretty obvious, right?
But I'm glad it's done. Didn't want to think of him sliding into Varitek's position.
You misspelled "Martinez".
Martinez and Mauer could co-exist on the same team. One would probably DH while the other catches.
Here's to Mauer hitting .400 one of these seasons.
Posted on the Twins' MLB page here.
(No, not the conflicts with ownership about facial hair)
That said, we've been hearing a lot about the astronomical contract Pujols is going to command after the 2011 season. I think this puts into perspective how off-the-map ARod's extension was and I'd expect you won't see another $200 million deal for a long, long time.
If Pujols is after the money, he'll get over $200m, easily. But he might be more concerned to stay in St. Louis - his last contract, he gave them a big discount.
Don't mean to thread hijack, but with Teixeira locked in for the Yankees, I think Pujols and his agent will read the tea leaves, see there isn't nearly as much money out there as has been widely speculated, and take a lesser deal than the one Mauer just signed to stay in St. Louis.
Just need to figure out how to see the Syracuse game on Thursday while in a night class, and this day will be close to perfect.
Interesting party line, considering he actually graduated high school in the U.S. Two senior years? What is this, Saved by the Bell?
The discount isn't as big as it looks, since Pujols signed a long-term contract during the mini-collusion period of 2003-2004. In retrospect it wasn't a great time to sign a contract, but he got what we was requesting in arbitration (his first year), which would've been a record.
I wonder what the Twins' inflation assumption looks like. I guess to sign somebody like Mauer, you have to go with the standard 10%, but that doesn't seem sustainable.
I'm not sure I buy Mauer as a big injury risk. He's not as safe as Pujols or Teixeira, certainly, but why is he such a risk? He's a catcher? He's a tall catcher? He had a bad knee injury once?
Worrying about his rookie year injury I kind of understand, but that was six years ago. And any inherent risk in being a catcher is offset by the value he provides in being, you know, a catcher who wins batting titles.
And in a catcher with plus defense I should be complaining?
Where is Zeth? He was far more adamant that Mauer wouldn't sign with the Twins than any Yankee fan here.
See #14.
This Yankee fan is very happy. I think it's good for baseball when "franchise" players stay with their first team.
Missed that. Good to see it.
Because he missed a month last season with a joint problem? Because he missed 50+ games two years before that? Because his career high in games is 146? Because catchers get hurt a lot? Because guys who have already been hurt are more likely to get hurt again? I'm not sure it takes any particular creativity -- hell, it only takes half a brain -- to see why Mauer is an injury risk going forward.
Also, I'm pretty confident one of the 27 catching prospects in the Yankee system will stick at the position. Seems to me it was most likely that Mauer woulda otherwise ended up in Boston, and, of course, #### Boston.
Brian Sabean only wants crappy veterans.
No - Smallville.
And the 2002 Prospectus comment on Pujols marked a low point in their Cardinal coverage. There's careless and then there's libelous.
He's older than advertised, by at least three years according to some estimates. It was apparently a not-so-open secret in his college program, but the party line is that he “graduated early” from high school in the Dominican Republic.
This is completely and utterly baseless.
As for the topic at hand, this is a good day for baseball.
This is the same sort of thinking that allowed the steroid era to proceed merrily on its way for a few extra years. Jose Canseco's accusations were considered baseless by many as well.
Agreed.
Because he sure as #### looks 29 in it.
Bring a laptop, and log into NCAA.com--don't use headphones in class though, that might be too conspicuous
I'm sure having a prospect that is good enough to move Joe Mauer out from behind the plate is the least of the Twins' concerns. I'm equally sure that Wilson Ramos is not that prospect yet.
Unfortunately the Open House ended at 5:00, shortly before the news broke. The Twins were replaying the last 7 innings of Game 163 on the scoreboard throughout the day, which elicited numerous standing ovations from the crowd on hand--I'm sure a Mauer announcement at the park would have been crazy.
When is Morneau's contract up?
Most Yankee fans are OK with Mauer staying with the Twins. The possibility of Mauer going to Boston was what caused some Yankee fans to argue for his acquisition if he came on the market. However, for those who need something to worry about - there's still the Knoblauch precedent.
Until we see him posed in Sports Illustrated, kissing himself in the mirror while shirtless, I don't see this happening.
It will be rough on the Twins to have to settle for offense that is only significantly better than Johnny Bench's, as opposed to Mike Piazza's.
Bitter? My good man, you're welcome to crow about your deep pockets and free-spending ways but your sudden pride in big-ticket contracts doesn't amount to a speck of tarnish on a 2009 World Series Championship ring. Be aware that the reanimated corpse of Carl Pohlad has been sighted shambling towards the Twins offices, throatily decrying the wasteful allocation of his welfare money for a mere ballplayer.
If that catcher consistently plays about that much, sure. But Mauer doesn't. In fact, he has to DH a lot in order to get to the point where he's taking his PA nearly full-time. The salient point is that he's been hurt before and plays a position where guys have to miss time every year to keep from getting hurt.
I'm not saying that Mauer isn't a great ballplayer, because he patently is. But the idea that he's not an injury risk is wrong-headed.
My attitude, at least, is that if a star player hits the market (free agent or trade) then the Yankees have as much right to sign him as anyone. Letting Mauer go to Boston because signing him to NY might hurt the feelings of a Twins fan is dumb.
I don't know, maybe the Yankees would've signed Holliday or traded for Halladay if they had known the Twins were going to extend Mauer?
Right, because there is no possible way that anyone could have seen this coming until yesterday.
This. Oh god, this is going to happen. Three or four years from now, once the Twins' new-stadium shine has worn off, Mauer has had an ouchy or two, and Posada is finally laid to rest, this contract will be salary-dumped for whatever Alfonso Soriano non-star prospect happens to be hanging around the Yankees.
Doesn't Mauer get 10-and-5 status in 2012 or so?
Yes, but he has a full no-trade, so the 10-5 is a moot point.
