OLYMPICS: Results from Day Two

From day two of the Olympic Baseball tournament…

Stephen Strasburg had a no-freaking hitter through seven as the USA won the game 7-0 in a rain-shortened (8-inning) game. Matt “I was in the Sabathia Deal” Laporta and Matt Brown (Angels organization) had HRs.

The China-South Korea game was delayed for rain in the sixth inning.

Cuba beat Canada 7-6. Nick Weglarz of the Kinston Indians went 4-5 for Canada with 2 HRs. Canadian National Hero (look into your heart, you know it’s true!) Stubby Clapp went 2-4.

Japan beat Taiwan (or, as the IOC calls them, “Chinese Taipei") 6-1. Hideaki Wakui of the Seibu Lions went 6 innings and gave up 3 hits.

Tonight (Tomorrow): Chinese Taipei/Taiwan vs. China (winner gets the Strait), USA vs. Cuba, South Korea vs. Canada and Netherlands vs. Japan

Who is pitching for the US against Cuba? Is that out there yet?

They don't announce starting pitchers until an hour and a half before game time.

It should be Brett Anderson, Trevor Cahill, or Jake Arrieta.

My guess is Arrieta.

I wish Stubby Clapp's name was Clubby Stapp. Then we could all laugh at the spoonerism.

The logic behind starting Strasburg against the Curacaoans and not Korea fails me, as it did the Americans.

Korea is a potential medal contender; the Netherlands isn't. Strasburg is a good pitcher, to be sure, but he is still an amateur, and I suspect that plauyed into the decision.

The guy who started against Korea had experience playing in Japan, and so Johnson probably figured he was a better bet a) against a lineup full of experienced pros and b) starting the first game of a series played halfway around the world. That would be a lot of pressure to put on Strasburg.

Why they didn't use Anderson or Cahill in game one, I don't know.

Strasburg showed he is human in the series vs. Canada at the DBAP. In his first inning of work he wasn't really mixing his breaker in well and the solid Canadian lineup did a good job teeing off on his fastball. It as 96 mph, but it was flat and they knew it was coming. AA/AAA hitters can hit that.
The next couple innings he had both pitches going and starting mowing folks down, but his initial struggles are an example of why you might want pro pitchers going against pro hitters.

Cahill is pitching against Cuba tonight at 11:30 ET.
