One more name linked to Mariners: Johnny Damon

One other rather bizarre Mariner-related Damon anecdote. I heard from someone who works around the Mariners that after Bill Bavasi was fired in 2008, and the Mariners were searching for a new general manager, Damon actually was telling people he would be interested in the job. This person insisted that Damon seemed dead serious, even though he was still an active player. It didn’t go anywhere, of course, but I always thought it was an interesting notion. I meant to ask Damon about it last year when the Yankees came to town, but never got a chance.

Honestly, he would have been an upgrade over Bavasi.

Hey, Garth Snow proved that players can jump right to being a GM and be ridiculously successful

Mike Milbury vs. Bill Bavasi would be an interesting discussion

Gotta add Matt Millen to the list as well. And every GM in the entire history of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Too bad Seattle isn't in the NL; I would really like to see the contest of self-proclaimed idiot vs. self-proclaimed non-idiot.

Johnny Damon is an egomaniac.

My read on Johnny Damon is that he is a stupid person who doesn't realize he's stupid, which has to be the worst possible recipe for a GM. Imagine the trades he would make!

Hey he did graduate from Florida (high school)

I do remember when he was with the Royals, he lobbied very publicly for the Royals to sign Paul Sorrento. I don't think Sorrento even ended up playing in the big leagues that year.

Is he behind Matsui and Figgins in his Elias ranking?

The fact no one really seems interested in Damon is telling. On the one hand, there's a lot of teams that won't even kick the tires if you keep saying "3 years / $39 million!" On the other hand, it's not like folks don't know about his pop-gun noodle arm or his declining range... Perhaps folks are going overboard on the defensive evaluation here, and thinking when you take defense into account he's nowhere near a 3/39 contract?

I guess it might make sense if they're going to trade Saunders for a 1B, but otherwise I don't get the logic.

Funny, I said this exact thing today about Sarah Palin.

Real Americans don't appreciate your sneering elitist condescension, hippie.

So, how about, in honor of the American soldier, we never mention Sarah Palin again?

Too bad Cartman doesn't post here. He could singlhandedly keep this site hippie-free.
