Onion: Nationals Book It After Foul Ball Accidentally Smashes Capitol Rotunda

Ain’t no use joking
Everything is broken

According to eyewitnesses in the Capitol, the ball smashed into the dome at about 3:35 p.m., tore through the Apotheosis Of Washington—a 150-year-old, 4,664-square-foot fresco painted on the inside of the rotunda—and broke the arm off of a National Statuary Hall sculpture of William Jennings Bryan. The ball then bounced into the Senate Chamber, where it interrupted a vote on a $542.5 billion defense authorization bill, and landed directly in the mashed potatoes of early-dinging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), covering him with gravy and prompting him to exclaim, “Zimmer-maaaaannnn!”

Although McConnell had no evidence at the time that Zimmerman was responsible for the damages, he was the chief suspect, as he is the only National able to hit the ball farther than 300 feet.

Early-dinging?

I am old enough to remember when the Onion was funny.

The Onion is proof the adage that truth is stranger than fiction.

There is no greater common response that as soon as someone posts anything from anywhere that's humorous, someone in the first three posts will say it isn't or that it sucks. Thurber, Carlin, Groucho Marx, it could be anything.

Sure, but this wasn't humorous.

Yes it is.

Another vote for "not funny."

Is this a primary or a caucus?

my favorite onion sports headline was "Big Brown wins Kentucky Derby, runner-up euthanized on track"

...oh wait, that was espn.com, not the onion

I thought it was funny. Not as funny as "Mantle Blood alcohol nearing .400. Fans wonder 'Can he do it?'", but funny.

Marx. Not funny.

I liked it. I thought the William Jennings Bryan reference was a nice touch.

Some of the Onion is funny, some of it isn't. It's usually pretty easy to tell which parts were mailed in and which weren't.

I thought it was a good piece and somewhat clever.

This one from 2002 remains my favourite, even though it's only somewhat baseball-related. IIRC, a newspaper in China picked it up thinking it was a real story.

This particular piece isn't a stellar premise, but the Onion's sports section has been delivering the goods for a long time. Just this moment, next to the Rotunda article, it's got the headlines "Chris Chelios Plays In Record 100,000th Playoff Game," and "Stranded Baserunner Forced To Survive On Nuts And Berries Of Wrigley Field Ivy."

Come on: "Kenny Lofton Thinks He's Putting Finishing Touches on Hall of Fame Career"? "Dodgers' Playoff Hopes Dashed Following Acquisition Of Belly Itcher"? "Tom Glavine Ominously Announces He Will Be Last 300-Game Winner"? "Slight Breeze Shatters Ken Griffey Jr.'s Femur"? "Yankee Fans Lure A-Rod Out Of Dugout With Curtain Call In Order To Boo Him"? "Mackey Sasser: 'Hey Everybody, Look At Me, I Took Steroids—I'm Mackey Sasser And I Took Steroids' "? "MLB Credits Hank Aaron with 50 'Lost' Home Runs"? "Hideki Matsui Unable To Grasp Translator's Explanation Of Where Cory Lidle Is"?

Oh, and "The Simpsons" is still funny, too. Even if this week's episode isn't quite the equal of the combined fan memories of every great "Simpsons" moment of the first ten years.

The headlines are funny and the American Voices capsules are often great. The articles - meh. The Onion does better with short space nowadays. But back in 2000, the Bush-Gore controversy articles were classics.

Every one of those is funny (except possibly the Lidle, which is mostly just tasteless), but usually that's the only funny thing, the headline.

In the linked article, the headline is not funny. The line about Zimmerman was O.K. but would've been better if it rang true (someone pointed out Pena, I have Milledge and Nick Johnson). And, for example, if hitting the ball 300 feet is some kind of benchmark, the ability to throw 15,000 feet would be a big deal. It's just sloppy, inconsistent.

Onion headlines > Onion articles, for all values of Onion.

Modern Onion. It's been like that all down through the ages. Especially in a spot like this.
