I guess the positive way to look at it is that, being one of the worst seasons in the history of the franchise, there's really no place to go from here but up.
Might as well get to work. This gives him a chance to start evaluating what he has and he'll be there for the September call ups.
The hiring is fine enough I suppose, but it doesn't make enough of a difference to be truly significant.
I firmly believe that the Orioles will never be a truly respectable team as long as Angelos is the owner. He is cheap and is not willing to spend the money necessary to acquire top tier free agents, which has become virtually a necessity if you're hoping to be able to seriously compete against the Yankees and Red Sox on a consistent basis. Unlike the Rays, the Orioles haven't shown a solid organizational skill at talent identification in years, and I have it on pretty good authority that he is still very much the meddling micromanager on these issues, despite his P.R. effort to try and remain more behind the scenes.
At the present time, the Orioles look every bit as hopeless as the Pirates or Royals to me.
When I think of the free agent signings of the past few years, I am glad they didn't end up with Baltimore: Soriano with the Cubs, Lee with the Astros, Bay with the Mets. Teixeira wasn't going to sign with anyone but NY although he used Baltimore and DC to drive up his price.
The Orioles will have to improve through the draft and international signings. Most of the AA and AAA pitching talent is now overmatched in the Big Show. There are no position players at either level. Unfortunately this has been the situation for quite some time in Baltimore. Every September the team looks at their prospects and over rates their talent. Buck can see as well as Trembley and others that they don't match up to the opposition. Question remains for Buck and Andy McPhail- How do you get talented players?
This only works for teams that are active in the international market and can scout well and develop young players well. Unfortunately, the O's are none of these. Hopefully, Buck can make some improvements.
