Orioles reliever Rob Bell gets career, life on track after bout with anxiety

Bravo for Rob Bell...he did it without the help of Dr. Thorndyke and the PsychoNeurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous.

Bell’s breakdown was the result of an anxiety attack, a physiological reaction to the buildup of stress. Anxiety issues can manifest themselves in a variety of ways in athletes, most severely by inhibiting performance in what is commonly described as the yips.

...At first, none of it went well. He got wilder on the mound and frustration grew, the constant discussion of his issues nearly consuming him. Tired of tearing himself apart, he stopped seeing the doctors and taking the medications prescribed to him, trying things his own way instead.

“The more I was talking about it, the more I felt I was feeding the monster,” said Bell. “I just said I want to put this stuff in the closet, turn off the lights, lock the door and throw out the key. Whether it was right or wrong, I don’t know, but coincidentally things got better from there.

“How many people do I really want to let know how shitty I feel about myself or how embarrassed I am? Sometimes you don’t want to reveal your weaknesses. It’s painful. You feel vulnerable. It just sucked.”

He's also always on time for dinner, lest he be denied fruit cup and always knows to beware of birds on his way to the north by northwest corner of Golden Gate Park.

That's a great feel good story. I look forward to the revelation next week that he used HGH.

Whoa, comment #3 is incredibly stupid. Thanks for your well-considered thoughts.

It's almost certainly why you're not clever or funny. Nah, you're just a tw*t.

As a fan I try to give my team's management the benefit of the doubt in seemingly inexplicable situations, because there are real people playing the game. Why trade Jeremy Giambi for John Mabry? Perhaps Jeremy Giambi has the wrong attitude and his contributions aren't worth all the work it would take to make him play the game right. Why trade Vicente Padilla for nothing at all? Perhaps his alcohol problem is getting worse.

Then again, when I start doing that, I just remember the Polanco-for-Urbina trade, which was even worse as a person-for-person trade than it was as a talent-for-talent trade. Geez.

#3's too blunt, I think, but I agree with the sentiment. Writers love searching for these tales of redemption stories so much that they sometimes stretch the truth in order to make the story better.

Yes, it's great that Bell has gotten overcame some severe psychological issues and it's a good story. But the author goes on and tries to paint this as the great turning-point in Bell's career, when there's no justification for that. Even if you jump through hoops and eliminate his 2 worst innings, something which there's zero justification for, he's still a reliever with terrible peripherals and an ERA of 5.

From personal experience, panic attacks are not fun. You really feel as if you are going to die. Fortunately for myself, staying away from caffeine and getting enough sleep solved my temporary problem.

I like the term 'awfulize'.

He might be the worst pitcher in the O's bullpen, which is quite an accomplishment.

For me, it was stopping making markets in options that did the trick, though by the time I quit, I didn't really have any choice.

Quite an accomplishment indeed. I'm still not sure if it's Bell though.

Bell DID have a season when he was perfectly average, but he completely went to sh*t after that. In any case, much of his anxiety was probably well-founded, as he was always on the brink of getting sent back to AAA, even with the Rays.

Well, except for the getting rich part.

R Bell is a monster. If you only knew.
