Palm Beach Post: Marlins play spoiler again, knocking Mets from playoffs

“It’s fun, I’m not gonna lie to you,’’ manager Fredi Gonzalez said after the Marlins ended the season for both teams with a 4-2 victory over the Mets.
...
“Off our field!” was the chant from a vocal crowd of 56,059 that came hoping to see the Mets clinch but wound up watching the Marlins celebrate with high-fives after the final out.

“I think they were getting a little upset that we were taking too long to get off their field, and rightfully so,’’ outfielder Cody Ross said. “It’s tough for them, the last couple of years that we’ve done this.’’
...
“I’m sure Wes [Helms] won’t have any trouble getting a drink or dinner in Milwaukee when we go back next year,’’ Gonzalez said in the visiting managers’ office, where a TV showed the Brewers’ champagne celebration.
...
A day earlier, Olsen called the win while walking through Times Square dressed as a bunch of grapes as part of a team-bonding costume parade that included 20 players in costumes. “Some (Mets fan) asked me who I was. I said, ‘I’ll be on the mound tomorrow,’’’’ Olsen said. “We shook hands and he said something to me. I was like, ‘Yeah, it’ll be sour grapes for you guys tomorrow.’’’

Helms is probably figuring he finally doesn’t have to worry about that retired hog farmer stalking him anymore :P
(and this description of the Olsen-in-a-grape-outfit scene makes more sense than the one in the Daily News)

Unless either the Phillies or Mets have really good offseasons or the Marlins sell all their players, the Marlins are going to be my pick to win the 2009 NL East. That rotation is ridiculously talented and young.

Agree Russlan. The Marlins could be a NL version of the Rays. Hopefully (for us Met fans) Jeff Loria and Bud can collude themselves out of Ramirez, Johnson, Hermida, etc.

I think the Marlins will be populating other rosters with good players this offseason through trade. Isn't it 18 players or something arb eligible?

There already are rumors they'll look to move Jacobs in a trade, shift Cantu to 1b, and potentially give McPherson a shot at 3b. Uggla will make a lot of money in arbitration, won't be shocked if they move him too, depending on what they think of Chris Coghlan. And with Maybin more or less ready, they may look to move one of Hermida or Willingham...

BTW, Russlan, I've got 2 players for you to sponsor at B-ref, both for $10

Player 1
Please mention that he's a better 2bman than Dustin Pedroia

Player 2
Please mention that he's everything AZ could get for a 2bman better than Pedroia

Thanks!

Levski, I thought the deal was that we'd be both be putting up 10 bucks in tota; so it wasn't really a "bet", just that the winner would be the one that told the loser who'd they sponsor for the 10 bucks.

If I'm right about that, you only get one of those players.

#4,
Sounds like a solid plan.
As a semi-Marlins fan I would love to see them move Mike Jacobs (one of my least favorite ballplayers out there, hes absolutely brutal to watch) and try to replace him with some combo of McPherson (either at 1b or at 3b with Cantu at 1b) and Coglan if he is ready (Coglan either playing 2b with Uggla at 1b or Coglan at 3b with Cantu at 1b).
Gaby Sanchez might be able to contribute at 1b or maybe 3b in 2009 too.
Logan Morrison could pass the AA test and be ready in 2010 so you don't need to get a long-term fix out of that arrangement.

I'd also trade any one (or maybe 2) of the Ross/Willingham/Hermida OF depending on the offer. They might still need another season or half-season of minor league time but not only do the Marlins have Maybin the minors they also have the very good John Raynor and the toolsy Jai Miller with Scott Cousins maybe being able to contribute in a couple years

Levski/Russlan,

What was the bet?
   9. The Mets make Russlan sad Posted: September 29, 2008 at 01:16 AM (#2959700)
Who would post the higher VORP, Pedro or the Big Unit.

I lost miserably.

Russlan, the details of the bet escape me. But I'm fine with your scenario--in that case, I'd like you to plz sponsor Callaspo's page, with the note that he's better than Pedroia. I'll take Billy Buckner's page. If RJ is in a DB uni, and Pedro's in a Mets uni, in 2009, we can re-do the bet too...
   11. The Mets make Russlan sad Posted: September 29, 2008 at 01:54 AM (#2959716)
Can I say "some might say he's better than Pedroia?"
   12. With 17th Pick, From LA, 1k5v3L KcoLLoP Posted: September 29, 2008 at 01:56 AM (#2959718)
How about "some wise men might say he's better than Pedroia?"
   13. The Mets make Russlan sad Posted: September 29, 2008 at 02:13 AM (#2959726)
Cool.

Sweet. And sorry about the Mets. It's even tougher being a Mets fan than a Dbacks fan these days
   15. Eamus Catuli Posted: September 29, 2008 at 02:21 AM (#2959733)
I'd say he's better than Pedroia...

The Amazing Callaspo

(needless to say, he was a unanimous HOF inductee this year after retiring)

15: I'm guessing that Billy Buckner, the pitcher, sucks in that universe?
   17. Eamus Catuli Posted: September 29, 2008 at 02:27 AM (#2959738)
Buckner never made the majors.
   18. With 17th Pick, From LA, 1k5v3L KcoLLoP Posted: September 29, 2008 at 02:42 AM (#2959742)
Buckner's future in this universe doesn't look exciting either

“I’m sure Wes [Helms] won’t have any trouble getting a drink or dinner in Milwaukee when we go back next year,’’ Gonzalez said in the visiting managers’ office

That would be kinda funny, if Wes Helms is suddenly a hero and fan favorite in Milwaukee now.
   20. With 17th Pick, From LA, 1k5v3L KcoLLoP Posted: September 29, 2008 at 02:48 AM (#2959746)
It would be kinda funny too if Luis Gonzalez had said that about Helms, using the "we"
   21. BeanoCook Posted: September 29, 2008 at 02:53 AM (#2959748)
If I saw Helms in Milwaukee, I'd get him George Webb, sure no problem.
   22. JoeHova Posted: September 29, 2008 at 04:35 AM (#2959761)
If I saw Wes Helms in Milwaukee, I probably wouldn't spit on him again.

Unless either the Phillies or Mets have really good offseasons or the Marlins sell all their players, the Marlins are going to be my pick to win the 2009 NL East.

Really Russlan, to read your posts the last few days the Phillies are the most fortunate team in history - it seems to me they'll just keep getting "lucky" next year too, with the "luck" in this case being that Happ and Blanton will replace Eaton and Kendrick over a full season.

The Marlins defense is horrible, and even the proposed MacPherson/Cantu/Jacobs switch won't change much.

(T)he Marlins are going to be my pick to win the 2009 NL East. That rotation is ridiculously talented and young.

That sounds vaguely familiar.

I would like to take this moment to point out to the class that Mike Hampton outpitched Pedro Martinez in 2008.
