Palm Beach Post: Marlins will seek lower-cost free agents

Strong contender for “Least Shocking Headline of 2007” award.

Aside from catcher Yorvit Torrealba, the Marlins also are interested in catcher Michael Barrett and pitcher Mike Maroth, according to industry sources. The Marlins will begin reaching out to players this week, starting with Torrealba, who is considered their top choice to replace Miguel Olivo. But the New York Mets also like Torrealba, so the Marlins are lining up alternatives.

Barrett, 31, broke in with the Montreal Expos and played for them from 1998-2003. At that time, he was close with Jeffrey Loria, who owned the Expos before taking control of the Marlins in 2002.

But Barrett might prove to be too expensive. He made $4.53 million in 2007 in a season split between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres. He is expected to be seeking a multiyear deal, which the Marlins rarely offer players.
...
Florida, trying to improve its pitching staff, also is expected to make an offer to Maroth, a left-hander whom the St. Louis Cardinals released in October after he struggled badly in 14 appearances, seven of them starts.

I heard somewhere that the Marlins got around $35 million in revenue sharing money last year. Wasn't their team payroll well under that? What a farce.

Watching Maroth this year he looked like he'd have trouble getting outs at any level of professional baseball. About as bad as anyone I've seen, and I watched the games where Spiezio and Miles pitched. Not sure he could get College or HS guys out. If lucky he'd be OK in little league. He'd overpower teaballers, but only because none of them have yet seen a pitcher.

You know you're running a AAA team when Michael Freakin' Barrett is considered too expensive. Why would anybody agree to build this team a Port-a-Potty, much less a stadium?

And yet the Mets only managed 2 hits and 1 run in 7 1/3 innings against him.

Did Dan Littlefield land a job with the Marlins?

Cam Bonifay?

I'd be stunned if Barrett gets a multi year deal.

And I guess I can stop being the last guy to like Michael Barrett now that I know he actually likes Jeff Loria.

How long would it take Scott Olsen and Michael Barrett to get into a fight? I'd guess two weeks.

If everyone and their mother wants Torrealba, how is he going to be a "lower-cost free agent"?

Why in the world would a team in the Marlins' position want Mike Maroth? Hell, why would a team OUT of the Marlins' position want Mike Maroth? Man, the prognosis on all those injured young Marlin pitchers must really suck.

Barrett was close with Jeffrey Loria. Well, if that don't speak volumes.

Who was the last pitcher with two 20-loss seasons? Roger Craig?

Watch out, Roger, here comes Mike Maroth. Humm-baby.

edit: Damn, I guess it was Wilbur Wood.

Sure, Rickey would listen if the Fish called. Rickey's pretty sure he could handle CF, too.

Who has a better ZiPS projection? Rickey or Alejandro De Aza?
