Parents: Yanks should axe gang caps

Damn…Just as King Kay bought an out-of-date intertonelocing NY blue bandanna!

A group of concerned East Harlem parents are calling on the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball to stop selling hats from a cap manufacturer that adds gang colors and symbols to some of their wares.

The hats, festooned with a crown above the “NY” or with a red or blue bandannas stitched in, are well-known short-hand signs for street gangs such as the Latin Kings, the Crips, and the Bloods, according to the Johnny Rivera, president of the Coalition to Protect Our Children, which is leading the fight.

“These corporations are capitalizing on known friction within communities of color,” Rivera said.

“Any 11-year-old could buy one of these and get jumped if they walk in the wrong neighborhood because they don’t know the signs.”

That request by the Harlem parents seems reasonable. However, it would make just as much sense for the parents to tell their kids not to buy these hats.

I, for one, never did anything my parents told me not to do.

To me the obvious thing is to just disband the Yankees, and expunge them from the historical record.Wouldn't that be the easiest way to solve the problem? Or at least the most enjoyable?

It would take all of twelve seconds for knock-off merchandise to fill the demand if the Yankees or MLB pulled the plug on New Era. Actually, half the stuff is probably already knock-off merchandise.

I think the Yankees should axe the gang caps what they want to do.

This never would have happen if MLB had an officially sanctioned gang cap.

MLB's more worried about the use of "gang hats" in MySpace pictures right now.

Did MLB's dog get run over or dogfought or something?

That's like the third person in a week who said they've been harassed by MLB lately over what basically amounts to free internet publicity.

I think every team should axe all their crazy colored hats. Theres no need for a camo Red Sox hat or a white Yankees hat with an equally white logo. Hideous, hideous, hideous.
And why are there UNC hats in red, NC State red. Freakin retarded idea

I agree with you MM1f but you know it is sales! The one I hate is the Yankees cap in RedSox colours!

I was at Stanford a few weeks ago and went looking for a Stanford cap in green and white instead of red and white, because if they made them in green and white they would look just like Michigan State caps. Then I thought, this is a really stupid endeavor.

MM1f, you can pry my pink Red Sox hat off my cold, dead head.

Precisely. Nobody should be allowed to wear a hat in a style that the team has never actually worn. I had a customer come into my office last week wearing a yellow-and-black plaid Angels cap, and I had to restrain myself from violence.

Odd-colored caps used to be so unusual that I remember seeing a green Reds cap on display at the Hall of Fame, from when they had worn it on St. Patrick's Day for a spring training game one year. I wonder if it's still there.

You can get pretty much any color Ohio State caps and shirts too, even in blue.

The local annoying talk radio folk have been making a big fuss lately over the fact that the Indians team shop at Jacobs Field sells Yankees merchandise.
