Pedro may pitch himself into extension with Mets

Instead, Martinez seems to be relishing the opportunity, just as he is the season ahead of him, without worrying about his upcoming free agency."I’ve got to prove that I’m healthy and I’m worth another contract,” Martinez said. “That’s being realistic. I’m committed to pitching, to doing for this team what I didn’t do last year. They probably needed me more than I thought.”

Last season was more about survival for Martinez. This year, however, Martinez enters with a totally different mind-set and has people believing he could win a fourth Cy Young Award.

Johan Santana is on track to start Opening Day on March 31 in Miami, but when someone asked Martinez Tuesday if he was still considered an ace, he conceded nothing.

“I’ll take my chances against anybody, not only Santana,” Martinez said. “Santana is the best right now to my understanding—probably the best pitcher in baseball. But you match me with anybody, let’s see what happens.”

It’s spring training so everyone is optimistic. That said, it sure does sound like Pedro is feeling well and looking good on the mound. I also am not worried about the situation. If Pedro is healthy and pitching well, Minaya has a good enough relationship with Pedro that negotiations should not be that tough.

If (big if) Pedro goes out and has a "18-5, 2.97" type season, and is by all accounts healthy, it wouldn't surprise me to see a bunch of teams bidding on him. We've already seen Pedro jump teams because he got offered an extra year once; why wouldn't he do it again?

Of course, this is a HUGE if. I wouldn't lay any money against Pedro coming back and having a great season, because, well, he's Pedro and we've all seen what he's capable of and how proud, smart, and competitive. Still, he's human and 36 years old and still more or less coming off a shoulder injury. Realistically, it's more likely he's getting one or two year deals from here on out.

300 wins, baby. It's coming.

I project #300 on May 13th, 2014, Fenway Park. I'll be there.

I sure hope your right MCOA.

Hey, I've had enough of Mets' pitchers getting their 300th win for other teams in some other venue. If/when Pedro gets # 300, it should be in Citifield, still pitching as a Met, where he belongs.

He may currently pitch for the Mets, just as he once pitched for the Expos. But Pedro is a Red Sox pitcher.

EDIT: and, yes, this is all basically an expression of my anger at the fact that Pedro pitches for your team and not mine. But we got a year of Matt Clement and I got a handle, so everyone wins, I guess.

I know. I was just trying to get a rise out of you. Believe me, having sat through Seaver getting his 300th at Yankee Stadium in a White Sox uni, I know exactly how you feel about this. Exactly.

Pedro has a much better relationship with Omar and the Wilpons than he did with Theo and Henry.

The 2009 Sox won't resemble the 2004 Sox very much. If Manny isn't brought back and Timlin retires, the only guys on the last Sox team Pedro was on left would be Ortiz and Youkilis.

I don't see someone blowing the Mets offer out of the water.

When the open market arrives, that and 2 bucks will get Omar on the subway. The Mets would be fools to risk that.

I'm as irrational as MCoA here. I want to see Pedro stay a Met for life, even if it means a leap of faith from the Mets this winter.

Indeed, when I saw it happening, they could have knocked me over with a . . . cow.

That seems mild. If Pedro does that, it would absolutely SHOCK ME if he wasn't fielding offers from a bunch of teams.

If this happens, I expect Omar to sign Pedro sometime after the break. I doubt he'll become a free agent if this happens.

Pedro has beaten 29 of the 30 teams. Boston Red Sox, you're NEXT, because... well, there's no one else left to be next.

Certainly. The only question in that event is going to be length of the deal. The bidding will start at two years and an option.

From the Mets' POV, the only question would be how many games they will have won the division by. It's almost (almost) impossible to imagine the circumstances in which Pedro could win 18 games and the Mets not coast.

Santana, torn labrum, see, that wasn't impossible.

Pelfrey had a pretty good start to his spring training. 2 IP, 1 infield hit, 1 strikeout, no walks. Oddly enough, only he got 4 flyball outs and 1 groundball out. He mostly faced Granderson, Polanco, Timo Perez, Ordonez, Cabrera, and Guillen.

Gotay got a double and walked. Fernando got a hit in his only AB.

See, that's the thing about people letting their imaginations run amok. All sorts of ugly things can happen -- like Swedish Chefs accidentally getting themselves caught in cuisinarts and being hacked into a million disgusting, bloody pieces that are hurled around the kitchen in a bloody pulp. See how ugly imagination can be? Let's all just try to rein in our imaginations, shall we? No sliced and diced chefs, no torn labrums for Venezuelan multi-millionaire pitchers.

I could see it. I think the Mets have the least variance of the NL east Big 3. If Atlanta gets great pitching from either Hampton or James to go along with peaks from Smoltz and Hudson, they could be a 95+ win team. Same thing for the Phils if Hamels makes a leap and Myers realizes his potential as a starter. Both teams have the potential to be make things very tough on the Mets.

It's not that hard, let's see...Jose Reyes quits baseball to become a Buddhist monk and fight for Tibetan freedom, David Wright is discovered to actually be the head of the Genovese family and is indicted on racketeering charges, and Johan Santana ceases to exist after a distraught Twins fan builds a time machine and goes back in time to prevent him from being born.

If those two things happen, Pedro ain't winnin' any 18 games.

And (while we're imagining here) can we reverse them -- and give me the address of David Wright's monastary?
