Perrotto: Pirates manager: Russell the choice?

Russell’s paradox at play…

The Pittsburgh Pirates have settled on their next manager but aren’t ready to say who it is.

There were strong indications Friday night that the choice was former Pirate third-base coach John Russell.

Russell, 46, who was on the Pirates staff in 2003-05, is currently the manager of Philadelphia’s Class AAA Lehigh Valley farm club.

Has JR finally kissed enough butt to turn in his tickets for a manager's position? If so, the Pirates 16th (17th, 18th, ..) consecutive losing season is etched. Pirate fans need to unpack their Bozo the Clown suits from 2005.

I like managers who prove themselves by succeeding in the minors.
Bad franchises look to recently retired heroes and give them the top job.

Russell will be very low on the list of reasons why the Pirates maintain their run of losing seasons.
