Peter Gammons checks in with Fire Brand

Evan interviews long time Floyd Dakil fan, Peter Gammons.

What can Dustin Pedroia possibly do next to top what he’s done in his first two seasons?

I’m not sure Pedroia can top his offensive stats, but he will continue to improve every minute phase of his game. I do think if they get more power behind him, he will concentrate more on pitch selection. I talked to friends at Athletes Performance Institute in Tempe that say he’s more obsessed than ever. I want to see some of those marathon ping pong matches between Pedroia and Brian Roberts, whose tennis/eye/hand coordination skills and off every chart.

How do you feel blogs, both as a tool for grassroots media like MVN, as a part of mainstream media like Extra Bases, or as an athlete’s direct to fan communication device have changed the media landscape? Do you think media is better now in total because of it, less collectively informed (given Bob Costas’ arguments), or just different? How do you think media and coverage of the game will continue to evolve?

The media world has dramatically changed, and I feel the blogs are part of our landscape. Are there instances when there is little accountability? Yes. Do I think we need reporters who understand players as people? Yes. Do I agree with everything? No. Look, I always read every word that Sean McAdam writes, because he is a giant. But the fact remains that if you line up the seriousness of good bloggers vs. the angry white minority shock jocks on radio--not Michael Holley, for instance, but those whose worlds exist to spread agenda--are superior to listening to talk radio. My car has Sirius, so I listen to Rivals Radio (I love college football), Little Stephen’s underground and the BB King blues station.

I'm glad to hear Pedroia is back to playing ping-pong after being injured in a match just a couple of years ago when he fell off the table.

The first Peter Gammons piece not tagged with "Music"? Wow. Wonder if he has discovered "Nights with Alice Cooper" yet....

Anyway, his insight here seems to be that the Red Sox will trade for a catcher and Varitek will accept arbitration (i.e. not go for a multiyear FA deal). A one-year transition period before the catcher of the future becomes established.

I did. My latest car has a malfunctioning lighter so I cant install XM on it and I've been making a couple of moonlight drives a week between Hartford and New Haven.

What?

They've been talking to Rocco Baldelli, and I've wondered if, given Arizona's money crunch, if they took Eric Byrnes' contract, would it be possible to get Montero. Byrnes would be a very good fourth outfielder.

Yikes. That would be one expensive (and probably angry) 4th outfielder.

What?

I think he's saying good bloggers are better than non-Michael Holley talk radio, but I could be wrong. That's one hell of a convoluted sentence.

That's one hell of a convoluted sentence.

it's one hell of a paragraph! The question (which is pretty crappy and rambling itself) doesn't ask about accountability, understanding players as people (is he saying reporters are good at this?? the ones who gripe about every money-grubbing player?? the ones who run down Manny based on FO leaks??). Then the wacky sentence you cited. Then the non-sequitir into Sirius radio (does Gammons do something for them?).

So the question was "how have blogs changed the media landscape" and Gammons' answer is "I like to pretend I'm hip."

What?

The "angry white" comment is probably a dig at WEEI's Dennis + Callahan. Convoluted certainly, but I think he's just saying there's good and bad in each medium.

That would also be one stupid trade for the Dbacks. Money crunch or not, they're better off with Eric Byrnes as the 4th OFer and Montero as the backup catcher than the zero they receive from Boston. AZ's real problem last year was the lack of depth at the major league level. When Byrnes went down, and Upton went down, and Hudson went down, the Dbacks had to give tons of at bats to weakass hitters like Salazar, Romero, Burke, Tracy, etc., and when that didn't work (a shocker), either trade for useless players like Clark or Eckstein or overpay for rentals like Dunn. Both Byrnes and Montero provide valuable depth on the 25man roster. Byrnes will be what he's always been, a pretty good 4th outfielder, and Montero will remain a pretty good backup unless a trade market develops for him. Giving up on Montero just to dump Byrnes is inane.

This is not very logical, at least not until you evaluate what you are going to do with the money.

As your own subsequent comments make clear, the DBacks have plenty of holes to fill and thus, freeing up cash may well give them more benefit than what they give up.
