Philadelphia Daily News: Amaro: Feliz ‘a winning player’ (RR)

and as his B-Ref sponsor page calls him…The “Prodigious Out Making Machine.”

Why would the Giants, a team that finished next to last in runs scored in 2007, make so little effort to keep him? Why, in fact, would they offer him less than the $5 million he made last season and why did he end up having to take a pay cut to come to the Phillies?

“I don’t know,” Feliz said softly. “I would love to know. But I don’t know why.”

One ranking baseball official with intimate knowledge of the San Francisco front office, offered this opinion: “He has the ability, the raw tools,” he said. “He has the potential to be a pretty decent player. His raw numbers are pretty good. And he’s a manager’s dream, an outstanding young man who doesn’t complain about anything.

“But then you see him swing at a 1-2 slider in the dirt with two outs and the tying run on third. Or you know that he’s a pretty good third baseman with a superb arm, yet when a big play is needed, he sometimes drops the throw.

“Maybe somebody can get to him. But you look at his on-base percentage [.288] and the other things and he just wasn’t consistent enough.”

What's with, "he sometimes drops the throw"? Sounds bizarre, made-up.

Seriously - Petey's a great guy by all accounts, but there isn't a Giants fan alive who doesn't know what happens on a 2-strike count, with a slider in the dirt.

Crissakes. He's not a 24 year old prospect. He is what he is at this point.

True. I'm 35 and I keep hoping my poetry will suddenly stop sucking. Yes, that's right. I write poetry and I drink tea. And I don't even hedge by trying to sound like Bukowski. Now who wants to fight!

The ghost of Dylan Thomas told me he would like to put his fist on your gob. "If only," he sepulchrally moaned, "if only. Boys of summer, my ass."

Ha! Something tells me this isn't going to segue into a one thousand post thread, ala the Rob Neyer movie thread anytime soon.

Next time someone tries to tell you there's no such thing as a dumb question ...

This admission isn't going to help much with your presidential bid, Adlai.

And Verlaine's tortured spirit replies, "mais oui!
It shall be, then, upon a summer's day"
As it starts polishing its musket

Ah, but so did Miyamoto Musashi, and he was pretty much the most ass-kickingest guy ever!

Skill with prose and poetry seems to be a requirement for Indian political leaders! You could try there if you fail here.

Will they settle for effort instead of skill? If I had any skill, I wouldn't be locked in this cubicle with spreadsheets goofing with you guys all day.

Are you having a laugh. Because those two skills are basically all I've got. Who knew that in this world there could be a place for the likes of me.

When I saw a Pedro Feliz link go to 18 posts, I knew it had to have gone horribly off-topic. Imagine, poetry and tea. What's this site coming to?

And how come Jose Mesa can be Joe Table but I have never heard Pedro Feliz called Peter Happy? Imagine the fun with that name.

Actually he was sometimes referred to as Happy Peter on talk radio in the Bay Area.

When he first broke into professional baseball, everyone called him Pedro Felix, and that continued for a substantial length of time because he was too polite to correct them.

Thank you Vin Scully.
