Phillies acquire reliever Eyre from Cubs

While driving from Chicago to his Florida home, Scott Eyre got the “fresh start” which he had sought.

That fresh start will come with the Phillies, who completed their search for an experienced second lefty reliever by acquiring Eyre from the Cubs for Minor League right-hander Brian Schlitter on Thursday.

“I asked how their bullpen was, and if they were just looking for guys, and they said, ‘No, we think you can still pitch,’” said Eyre, who will join the Phillies on Friday. “I said, ‘Great, I’m ready to go.’”

Our long national nightmare is over.

Actually, that's unfair -- Erye was pretty solid last year, and nominally good (if awfully homer prone) in 2006. For a team with the Cubs resources, they probably got their money's worth - even given this year's salary was a waste.

As I said when Pops posted it another thread -- the way Eyre has thrown this year, the Cubs could have acquired brie and Schlitz in return and it would have been a steal.

I still don't really trust Cotts as the LOOGY -- Marshall doesn't really fit the bill -- but Eyre was just dreadful and since Lou wouldn't use him, even to mop up, he was just wasting a roster spot.

Of course, Lou wastes a couple roster spots on relievers he never uses for weeks at a time.

As a Mets fan, I think this as cool
As a baseball fan who wants to see more R.J. Swindle, this sucks

Swindle is on the Canadian Olympic team anyway. By the time he gets back it'll be time for roster expansion.

Any idea why his innings are so low? It looks like he's a starter so it must be injuries.

He's been pitching in relief. You weren't looking in the right place.

Schlitter's a local kid (Park Ridge). Fastball/slider guy, mostly, keeps the ball down, gets lots of grounders. Needs better command of his secondary pitches (where have I said THAT before?). Typical Grade C relief prospect.

I saw the 4-3 record and assumed he must be starting to amass 7 decisions in 40 innings.

Thanks for the clarification, Mike.

In other words, pretty awesome return for a 36 y.o. LOOGY that really does look pretty cooked this year -- and was likely to be released anyway.

was likely to be released anyway

The Cubs had already DFA'ed him and had a week to trade his rights or lose him for free.

And the Phillies ate all the salary!

Schlitter and Fukudome in the same org. Good thing Harry's not still around. The FCC would be all over him.

Steve Stone hinted this week that Eyre had some issues, maybe a little *makes drinkey drinkey motion*.

And the Phillies ate all the salary!

They sure seem to like to eat salary on their pickups and eat salary on those they release or give/trade away (Helms, Thome, Abreu).

And remember that they are only a middle market team. Honest. Look at the payroll.
