Brad Lidge will be saving games in Philadelphia through at least the 2011 season, after the pitcher agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract extension.
The deal includes a 2012 club option and performance incentives.
Working for $6.35 million in the final year before becoming a free agent, Lidge is off to the best start of his career, with an 0.77 ERA in 35 appearances. He’s one of two full-time closers in the Major Leagues, along with New York’s Mariano Rivera, not to blow a save this season.

I love the way this is stated as a fact... because closers never burn out or get traded or anything like that...
Well, if Lidge pitches like the old Lidge (pre-Pujols), it will be worth it, if he falls apart it won't matter whether it was $9M per season or $12M.
The interesting point is that it pretty much ends the chance that the Phillies would move Myers back to the bullpen. Unless, that is, they want to pay their 8/9 combo $24M next year.
and we sure took the phils for a ride getting them to take bruntlett too so as we could get kaz matsui. AND we got bourn (the new tim raines) and geoff geary. because you can't never have too many middle relievers you know
